thanks for all the comments guys. we had 2 full days rest in seattle after which co-pilot 1 flew back east as planned.

this was the route west for copilot 2 and me. 3000 miles. in total the complete trip was 9,000 miles.

across the country many major highways had short, relative to the overall trip, sections of roadwork. some were minor resurfacing, but others were bigger. like this one heading east out of the national parks

mechanically the 964 is a robust machine. i bought it in December last year with 110,000 miles. It has 126,000 today.

in the 40 deg weather i decided to turn on some heat, but got flashing lights instead.

the heater thermostat switch was fried. but cutting back to fresh cool air solved the problem

somewhere before omaha NE the rear tires gave a funny look

a quick google search found the positively reviewed Walker Tires of Omaha. And a quick stop there took these off

and got these $45 used donuts to bring doggy and me the 1200 miles back home

over the entire trip there were 4 or 5 fills of this

I would love to see the country that way! Driving a cool comfortable sporty car, with my wife, who also happens to be my best friend(which is helpful), seeing all those sights, sampling all that cuisine, driving on those twisty roads!

I don't know about bringing all the dogs though.
As much as I love my dogs, my 2 year old Golden, Doyle is 84 pounds, and my 10 year old blue healer mix Storm is 52 pounds. It's not the weight though they would just be too big.

We could pull it off in a camper truck with the whole crew, but that wouldn't be as much fun as driving all those cool roads the USA has to offer.

I'm thinking it would have to be a significantly less ambitious trip to get Mrs to go for it.

Maybe we'll do Spring, Tx to The Grand Canyon first and see how that goes.

Thanks for sharing! What an awesome trip!

You people who do a run like that get my respect.
Someday I hope to follow your example.

Here is a pic of your other ride from the MMille - you really do get around.

A couple of weeks ago I took a similar trip, tho it was out and back. Lafayette, La. to Ok City and KC for back to back Dylan shows. Then out west on I 40 to visit a longtime, lifelong friend in Huntington Beach, then back on 8 and 10 thru AZ, NM, waltz across Texas back to Cajun Country.1800 miles home in 24 hours. But it was in my 95 E36 M3, so I could take my bicycle with me. I need to figure out how to fit my bike in the 72S.... Was able to ride PCH 3 days in 65-70 degree heaven. I just love the solitude and the "going into neutral" feel of a long road trip. Plus seeing the Big Skies of the western US.

Great trip! How many days did you take to do it? I'm starting to plan a similar trip for next year. I'll have 5 or 6 weeks free next summer and I'm looking forward to my own Steibeck (no Charlie) trip. I like your route.

    Thanks
