Rear Rally Tools & Spares Partition

In my continuing quest to build as authentic a period rally car as possible using factory specifications, I have added a rally part that the factory refers to as:

"rear partition with tools and spares pockets - P/N 901.555.085.00"

This is a rare part indeed and I wanted to get it as correct as possible. I was able to find a few pictures on the internet and also had some that I had taken in person at various events over the years. And I had some valuable input from Don Ahern. Here's the finished result:

Just in time for the Palos Verdes Concours next week. Hope to see a bunch of folks there!

    Cheers,

In response to some PMs asking for measurements, I will see what kind of specifications my wood worker has. I know that he made templates out of cardboard that he used for the final build. His measurements were perfect and his craftsmanship is second to none.

It was then covered in regulation vinyl by a local auto upholstery shop that does excellent work. He had what appears to be just about the perfect elastic strap in stock. The insides of the pockets were painted black. It was mounted on the firewall using the exact screw placements that the factory used - five across the top, two across the bottom, evenly spaced. We had to be careful about going too far and twisting the engine compartment sound proofing material.

I'll post the specs here if they are in a format that I can configure right.

    Cheers,

In Volume 19, Number One, from March 2009 of the Early S Registry Club Newsletter "ESSES" there is an illustrated article I co-authored with Bob Tilton on how to build this box, with all the measurements and techniques, how to finish it, and how to mount it. That should give you all the information you need to make one.

John Dilger ( johndilger@aol.com ) takes care of the back issues I believe.......for a reasonable fee of course.

Thanks, Bob. And you should see the car with your new black deco script on it - 100% improvement. Looks a lot more businesslike than the red I had on there before.

    Cheers,
    John

P.S. I could have saved a lot of time if I been aware of that article! I wonder if we could put together an index of past articles and post them somewhere on the site?
