Guys,
For the past 4 (long) months I’ve been working on bringing back the rare glycerin bottle to the Porsche world. It mainly concerns 356 owners so I’ve been keeping a running thread on the ups and downs beginning with the conception on the 356Talk site: http://356registry.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21164 I’m sure some of you own 356’s and you might have seen it over there.
From the beginning of this project I’ve also been researching the relationship between these bottles and the 900 series cars as there is the single cross over year of 1965 for both model types. I began a thread laying out all of the information I could find with the goal of learning as much as possible: http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ad.php?t=34608 I found out the bottles were documented in parts manuals, owner’s manuals, magazine articles and most importantly by original owner 911’s and 912’s from the 1965 and 1966 Model Years. However, no bottles were reported by original owners from 1967 onwards.
It was then that I noticed that the ’65 and ’66 cars I was seeing had similar glove box upholstery to that in 356’s from ’56-’65. I then started a thread were we tried to narrow down the change over between the 3 horizontal strap 356 style upholstery which was known to hold a glycerin bottle and the replacement 2 vertical strap style which could not. The results put the strap change very close to the end of the 1966 Model Year: http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ad.php?t=36287
From the research noted above I feel that Porsche included these glycerine bottles (901.721.327.00) in 911's and 912's until the end of the 1966 MY. My hypothesis is that glycerin bottles were no longer provided in a new Porsche glove box after that point because there was no place to put them. So if you’ve got a ’65 or ’66 900 series car and there’s a small elastic strap to the left on the back of your glove box door, that’s what went there.
In the past few weeks I’ve received samples of both the injection molded cap and the blow molded bottle. Both passed the comparison test with my original so these reproduction bottles will be available in a few weeks time, just as soon as the production run is complete. I also did a small run of the ‘W 33’ tag that came attached to glycerin bottles in 1959 and 1960 356’s but since they’re so closely associated with the bottles they’ll be made available as well for any car needing one.
