I was asking myself that same question a few years ago and, after much research, I landed on the a 71E. A great combo of looks, handling and usable power.

In my experience, while there are certainly strong similarities within each model year and trim level, given that these cars are now between 37-45 years old, every single one that I have driven has a different personality and character. No two 72T's are exactly alike. While they are familiar, and some are more familiar than others, each early car I have driven possesses a uniqueness that I can't always describe, and some seem to connect with me more than others when I am in the driver's seat. My suggestion is that you figure out the price range you're comfortable with, and then go find one that speaks to you!
Take ANY year 911,and engineer/build it yourself.Starting from the bottom -up.Getting information from others on hp,gearing, suspensions;since there are always experts in any given field that can help you with getting everything compatible .Putting all the pieces together, drive your car in your intended build/use, and you will have the Best 911.Incedently,all years are great, just build around the year(from the start) and know that there is always a compromise or two with all of them! I think this is why a lot of people have more than one 911. If you have only one , count your self fortunate, if not satisfied,go back and read the first sentence....a non altered 911 is a good find any day,by the way....Cliff

'73 RS for sure, but counter to some of the others, I'd rate the 2.4 E as a good alternative to the 2.4 S as #2 on the list. The E is a great all around driver's car. The S, more specialized. IOW, you want to drive the E to the twisties, then drive the S in the twisties.
