    Paint tag for a 73 paint to sample car

    I'm having a look at a 1973 911 that is supposed to be paint-to-sample.
    The car has been repainted (badly) many years ago in light yellow, but otherwise appears quite original.
    I was expecting a 999-code paint tag, but instead it reads 138-9-1, seems original but I can't decipher it. Can anyone help? Does anybody has any experience on 73 paint to sample cars?

    Well, I can say that this is a new code for me. No idea what color it is. Can you provide a VIN?
    So yes, I'd say it was a custom color. The factory will probably say they have no idea what the color is.

    Color to match was usually the 900s like you said, except sometimes when it was a formula from another car. I've seen MB, VW and Opel codes to name a few. If you want to find out I would go to tcpglobal.com and send them the photo. They should be able to identify it. Good luck and let us know what you find.

    We've got a 70E with a COA that says paint to sample/98. The original tag is no longer with the car.

    Andrea, My Porsche has a paint tag of 231
    I have the COA from Porsche and they state that the car was a paint to sample.
    after much searching 231 is sambesi-grün
    so I do believe your car is indeed paint to sample

    Glasurit has these period corect 138 colors. The last digit on the paint tag gives the manufacturer of the paint used, can not remember if 1 is Lesonal, Glasurit or Herbets.

    thanks to everybody for your input.
    I checked on the Carrera RS book, and this car was apparently ordered in a Fiat color, giallo oriente (orient yellow), code 294.
    I would expect 294 on the paint tag, as it indicates a Lesonal paint and 294 is the lesonal code for this color, the 138 code is really strange.
    Despite the oddities, it is a nice color

    Just checked, the last digit on paint tag of special order paints(except those who got the 99 paint code) can be translated in this way:

    1 = Lesonal paint
    2 = Glasurit
    3 = Herberts paint

    Yours is a Lesonal paint, so you can dissregard my Glasurit paint code post above.

    Andrea, cann you find any traces of the original paint on the car? Is this a RS?

    John, the inner parts of the trunk and engine bay have been crudely repainted in black at some point, on very tiny spots in the trunk (contact area between hood and body) there are traces of a darker yellow/orange-ish paint underneath, but are really too small areas to say IMO.
    Yes, it is a RS.
