Thread: Porsche 911L 1968 901/30 Racing-Rally

  1. #141
After buying this last Rally car I have some renewed interest in the topic and I thought I would write something not based on club or world politics ie what we are really here for. In rereading this thread there are some things I have learned since we first started talking about these neat old cars. 68S Rally cars do exist after all however all I have seen were built in 67. The T rally or T/R was the group 3 replacement for the 1968 season. If someone has a 1968 build S Rally that would be cool to see.

Another observation in on US cars the Kardex is written Rally Kit, on Euro cars it is Rally equipment. Is there more to the Euro option? If not why would it be listed differently?

Great find Don.......and yes refreshing to read about CARS again!

I was about to suggest that the different terminology might be that on the Euro cars it could be fitted at build whilst US cars perhaps could not be imported like that so the parts had to come as a 'kit', however, I then checked and totally destroyed my own argument because the T/R I had was a factory collection by a British guy (ordered by the Porsche East African agent Gordon Crow) and on the Kardex in this case it was also called 'Rallye-Kit' !

I do believe we have to be careful in viewing these period documents and (perhaps) reading too much into the terminology, I love all this research but have found myself guilty in the past of assuming too much based on documentation, for example as I had the T/R restored we found a number of changes that the Kardex never captured. It is also worth remembering that the 'Rally-Kit' could also be the 'Sport-Kit I' and/or 'Sport-Kit II' etc.....

correct. The Drs car was sent back to racing division after it was at dealership as an s to be fitted for rally packages plus some more. Not sure if the r engine made it in to the car but rest did in time for racing before his r arrived.

I figured this would appeal to some of the rally freaks in here

In Eric's post #48 there is reference to Recaro or Bucket Seats as an option. Giving that the 1968 option list would have been for cars built from the last 1/4 of 1967 what Bucket Seats would have been offered.

The Early Fibreglass (GRP) Scheel seats were manufactured from my research from 1965 - 1968 and weighed 5.2kg without rails.

Does anyone have any period photos of the Bucket Seats that were available in 1968 as per the Porsche List Eric provided.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Mark,

I couldn't find any photos of bucket seats in the period photos I've collected for 1968 Sports Purpose cars.

Here's two photos of the seat in my '67. This is the steel GT/Ferrari seat that could be ordered. I'm not sure if this seat was still around 1968.

Please say that you will make a few sets of these seats....
