    Looking at a '72 E today

    Hi I am the owner of a '82 RoW SC, but I am looking for an early car and going to hopefully see a '72 E today. WHere do I find the VIN stamping on the engine block? Also the VIN on the body is:

    9112200352


    Could someone help me decode this?

    Best of luck to you today! The vin decodes to:
    a 1972 911 E
    3rd number=year...2 for 1972
    4th number=model...2 for E (1=T, 2=E, 3=S)
    This car was the 352nd off the line.
    I'm sure others may have more information, but the above is the basic decode.
    As for the engine serial, I've re-posted an old pic I found over on the Bird. You will want to look at the number at the base of the fan housing on the right. you're looking at the green circled #, the yellow circle is the engine type. The number should begin with "622..." for a '72 E. I can't recall off hand what the "type" would be for your engine, but I'm sure someone else here can help.

    Engine type should be 911/52 for both coupe and targa manual trans, 911/62 if sportomatic.

    These cars were MFI in 72 correct?

    All E's are MFI

    (Einspritzung, if I remember correctly, means fuel injection)

    Thanks. The pictures of the motor in this car appears to have CIS fitted. Is retrofitting CIS an easy undertaking? Is there any benefit?

    Hmm, red shroud, silver coil, CIS. The MFI is expensive if you need to buy the whole setup, but that gives you the chance to start fresh with a rebuilt system setup by a pro, for less time fiddling with the mixture settings. The car will be worth much more with the MFI.

    Is the case original or did someone put a 3.0 in there? Is the shroud just painted? It should be green.

    Is that the engine in the 'E'? If so, it does deduct significant value from the car. Getting the parts for a proper 2.4 E MFI system as well as getting it up and running is going to cost some $$$ (like several thousand $$$).
    As for the red shroud, looks like someone got a little carried away with the red paint in there given the red fan housing.
    Just make sure you've got the correct engine in there in terms of serial and type (or better yet COA matching) and you can always put together a MFI system if you want to go that direction.
