    Dip Stick Length for 1973?

OK, so how long is your dip-stick???
All kidding aside, my '73 S has always seemed to take a little too much oil to get the stick to register correctly. I have a Carrera (3.2) cooler, otherwise the whole system is stock. With 10 quarts added, the level doesn't even register (yes, I'm checking it with the engine running and at operating temp).
After doing my valve adjustment which entailed replacing the sump plate gasket and S pipe running to the cooler, she took about 13QT. Seems WAY too much to me.

Long lead in, but can someone that's sure they have the correct dip stick in their '73 let me know how long it is? I'm thinking maybe somehow over the years my stick was swapped for a shorter one. Crazy, I know.

    Cheers

Not crazy. There was a change in there somewhere, but it only accounts for maybe 1/2 quart. My 73 with a big front cooler took 13 quarts, so you're in the ball park.

    Kent,

My April build 73S's dip stick, when straighten out, is very close to 250mm in total length.

It's 10mm from tip to the MIN. mark, and 75mm from tip to the MAX. mark.

I have no reason to doubt that this is the original dip stick.

    Hope this helps,

    Chuck

    Thanks Chuck & James.
I'll have to measure what I've got tomorrow AM.

OK, I couldn't wait. Mine measures the same as your Chuck. Thanks for going to the trouble of measuring.
I forgot to mention that I also replaced the tank level sender with the new superseded part 911.641.541.02
I noticed that Pelican states the following when using the replacement sender "For models through 1980, also use one 930-107-731-01-M100" dipstick. Could this be a source of problems, like the old stick will interfere with the sender movement? Their original '73 stick PN is 930-107-731-00-M100
Hopefully I'm not trying to overcomplicate this, just trying to make sure that I get the right amount of oil in my baby .

Perhaps the new sender takes up less volume in the tank, thereby throwing off the reading? It would read low on the dipstick for the same (correct) amount of oil.

My 73 is also 250mm long, with min @ 240mm and max @ 175. The oil tank that belongs with that dip stick is the 73 with the alu. oil filter console. In 74 when Porsche went to the tank with no alu. console, (the filter screws right onto the tank) they increased capacity by about 1 QT, all at the bottom of the tank. The dip stick that goes with that tank is 295mm long, with min @265mm and max at 190mm. The long stick would lower your oil level by 15mm. The oil level sender listed above is run in conjuction with the new dip stick but will lower oil level. The proper oil level sender for 73 only is 911 641 541 00. Some of the printed parts manuals say to use the 901 sender and PET does a supersession to the new sender but both are in error. Gordon P.S. Some cars need their oil levels lower so they dont puke oil, so late sender and dip stick might be a good choice.

My 73.5 has oil level sender 911.641.541.00, which appears to be correct per the discussion above. However, I've got dipstick 930.107.731.01, but I should have 911.107.731.01, correct? This would explain why my sender that I just removed and cleaned up is reading low. I knew the 930 dipstick was off, so have been compensating in keeping the oil level up. But I'd rather have the right dipstick than be guessing.

Interestingly, the 930.107.731.01 dipstick I have is 300mm long, min at 274mm, max at 213mm. Any possibility this is interfering with the oil level sender?
