Thread: Normal Engine Temperature?

    I finally hooked up with the original owner, at least from 1975. According to him he had the motor rebuilt a couple of times during his ownership. The last time he had FBR do the work and he went with with "bigger jugs". Unfortunately, he the lost the receipt and all he could remember was that he thought they were the largest available at the time. He remembers getting a call from FBR asking if he "wanted more HP" since the P&C's were going to have to be replaced. He said "sure, why not". All he could remember was "2.83 or 2.7", but he said due to his age his mind was not as sharp as it once was. I have never heard of 2.83, but that is what he remembered. He said they went with the largest they could go with and stay with the std. crank. Any why to tell externally what I have? He estimated that the current rebuild would have about 30-35K miles based on his weekend driving. I will have to go through my records and look for clues. I will have to see if FBR could dig up a receipt from that far back.

    even more reason to fit the cooler. Count the fins on your cylinders, there is a difference in the number between a 2.4 Biral and a 2.7 Nikasil although I can't remember what that number should be, 11 fins for a Nikasil? does that sound right?

    I've owned my '73S for 22 years here in sunny SoCal. The first two years without an external cooler, and the first 14 years with the stock 2.4S engine. The ONLY time I've experienced high temps, over 220, have been on the track in the summer.

    The 'normal' running temps should be between 180 and 210, as RPM goes up so will the temp but nominally. Other then summer, when I drive my car (even the first 2 years without the front cooler) at a constant normal RPM it hardly ever gets off 180.

    I even heard that back in the day that stock Early S's had the rep of being 'cold blooded little bastards'....

    I hope your temp issue is a combination of few little things that you are sneaking up on ....... however.... please remind us of how many actual miles this engine has on it.
    Has it been rebuilt?

    Most all these cars have had work done to them.
    When new these car's weak point was their top end.... Old mechanics said their top end were 'soft'. My records show my car's guides and valves were done at about 50,000 miles......

    I'm hoping not, but it might be your temp problem is a little 'deeper' then we've been thinking.

    However it appears the latest info may be that this is a 2.7 engine, bigger engine,,,,more heat!

    Yes, bigger engine according to PO. I have not counted the fins yet. Would a pic tell anything? i need to call FBR. Seems they would have noticed that when working on it and mentioned something to me, but maybe tv there is nothing notice. Or is it subtle? He did mention the fact that I have the good 7R case and the numbers match the COA. So that is goods new for starters.

    It's surprising that FBR does not have a file on the work done to your car. My shop has a record of all the major work they've done on my car going back 25 years or so. I'm sure they don't have one for every car but just repeat customers and cars that they know are still going to be serviced by them.

    I confirmed that my engine is in fact a 2.7. Been a while and I don't remember the number of fins on the cylinders, but it was the same no as whatever the 2.7 had, 15 comes to mind. As others mentioned, bigger engine needs extra cooler just been too busy to do it. I have all the parts needed, but between the 356A and the 66 911, my lift has been tied up. Car only gets hot in the summer, and I don't like to drive during the heat of the day anyhow without functioning a/c so has not been a problem.

    where do you put the fan? The battery box is right hehind the cooler and the tire right in front.
