I would doubt that a pre-production car for the entire 1972MY S / S Targa / or just Targa range would be a US model. So I would have an easier time believing that it was a car built for an important US customer , just an early example , or a pre-production 'US spec.' car.

Oh yes , I hate the fact that this dealer continually states he has "Kardexes" on his offerings. When in fact he has COA's (and he knows the differance). This seller is not worth speaking to regarding any 'facts'.

He thinks he knows it all , and all issues are cast in stone...known for certain.

Here's a number 11 car from 1969 . It was the first production unit for this model. And a eurospec. version I believe :

    "first production 914-6 #0011
November excellence article on the first production 914-6 euro car used as an assembly / production car."

From what I can assertain . The factory usually did not waste more than 10 shells (or less) per model (and I believe sometimes a crossover on sub-models) on what could actually be called 'pre-production'. And I probably should not use the word "waste" , as they were all used by someone then sold.

If this is accurate , then something is strange :

"According to the original Bill of Sale, the car was purchased on 6/4/1974 at Ralph Cutright Porsche, 1932 Wilshire Blvd., Sta. Monica, Calif."

I would have to guess that this car was not exactly 'new' on that date. Whether used for sometime here by the dealer (possibly combined with not selling for some time when eventually available for sale ?) . Or maybe a mistype and that's actually 73 not 74 ?

In general , there is a story here that has not been unearthed yet. I'm sure you could figure it out with some sleuthing . But I would not bother trying to get it from this dealer.

Maybe I am wrong about being used for awhile here , and it did stay in DE for sometime & was used by someone at the factory. I just think that would be unusual for a US tagged version. Again there is a buried story here. As to my statements prior , I just don't believe that being built prior to the summer vacation . Necessarily always means that for every MY , such a car is to be considered pre-production. But I could be wrong.

I do see that 1973 RS 0012 is referred to in factory literature as "prototype". So it can obviously vary as to how deep into the VIN sequence pre-production units can be. And cars can also be completed out of sequence. I know my distaste for this dealer does not help me digest / believe statements he makes or writes in any advertisements.
