    $ 950.000 low estimate for Steve McQueen's 911S?

    I've just read in the August issue of 911&Porsche World Magazine that an RM expert revealed that the low estimate for the slate gray 911S featured in the movie Le Mans and owned by Steve McQueen will be offered at
    RM auction this August with a low estimate of $ 950.000.

    It seems extremely high to me, leaving very little room for a bidding war. Seems a shame to jack up the estimate so high and not giving a real chance for the market to express itself freely. The Bond DB5 car auctioned earlier this year also carried a high estimate, and sold to a single bidder.....

    I wonder... What % of the cars value is due to each of these facts:
    a.) it was McQueens (what would it be worth if it weren't a movie car?)
    b.) it was in "LeMans" (what if it were a movie car but wasn't McQueens?)
    c.) It's probably a damn nice S (no movie and no movie star owner)

    I know, I know- too much time on my hands today.

    i dont know.. sounds over priced. then again, there is no way to put a value on this. it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

    Keep in mind at the Barrett Jackson OC auction a 1963 VW Samba Bus sold for $217k (including the buyers premium)

    Wonder what the purchase price was a couple of years ago when it went to a fellow registry member located in the northeast?
    Cheers!

    Purchase price a few years ago was reportedly less than half the estimate. The low estimate is negotiated with the consignor and is related to the reserve, so presumably, Frank will not take less than about $900k. As he is not what one would call a 'motivated seller'. RM is presumably reaping great PR from the advertising and attracting bidders who might not otherwise participate in the auction - it is something of a 'halo' car for Porsche types. On the other hand, McQueen's sunglasses sold for $60k! (but others of his cars sold for close to non-celebrity value)

    If the "McQueen Husky" - the one with Solar Productions on the title but no McQueen signature anywhere on any of the documentation - that sold at the Quail is any indication, the car is going to sell for a healthy, healthy sum.

    Time will tell....
