Thread: Interesting P.O.C. letter october 1964 regarding serial number 300013

  1. #11
Thank you for bringing this information to us.
It is so cool to find photos of particular cars from "back in the day". I'm sure the gentleman in Finland will be happy to see "before" photos of his car.

In the files at Porsche, as gleaned by two authors (former Porsche PR guy) Tobias Aichele and recently by Jurgen Lewandowski they list a total of 13 cars under the title of "prototype" in their respective books.

    The prototypes include:

    13 321 identified as #1 (901/1- after November 1964 911/1) "Sturmvogel"
    13 322 (901/2 and 911/2) "Fledermaus"
    13 323 "Blaumeise"
    13 324 "Zitronenfalter"
    13 325
    13 326 Quick Blue
    13 327 Barbarossa
    13 328
    13 329
    13 330
    13 352
    300 001
    300 002

Of these 13 cars six were used to the point of being given names. Most had multiple engines and were assembled, tested and disassembled as needed. #6 Quick Blue had, at times, a 356 Carrera 4 cam engine. Both F. Piech and then Hans Mezger's used #6 as their personal car.

Many years later we can point to 13 cars - in 1964 it seems the guys selling the cars pointed to 9 cars that met the criteria as "prototypes" subtracted that from the serial number and presented this show car as "the 4th car".

The Build Book list (made available in the 1990's) puts car 300 013 as the 13th car to leave the production line.

This just adds to the tapestry of the 901/911 story.

    Thank you.

Dave, yup - (typo?) letter date is a year out of sinc. - 1964 Los Angeles Auto Show. It took place Oct 24 - Nov 3, 1963 in the Pan Pacific Auditorium.

Karl Ludvigsen, Excellence was Expected, shows a 901 motor with the caption, "shipped to California, October 1964" (I always thought that was in reference to the Leo Rapp privately imported car "White Stallion" #32)
