    Nürburgring Badges . . .

Got onto this topic elsewhere, and, rather than take things off-thread there . . .

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ty-nine/page27

    . . . I want to start a special thread here.

What follows is a collection of images, observations, commentary . . . . mixed with some conjecture and, well --- a little blarney, maybe --- about some of the different/various Nürburgring badges out there --- past+present.

I don't have any special knowledge or experience --- and I am definitely no expert. But. I've been fascinated by this badge, ever since I first saw one some twenty years ago.

    Wanted one ever since.

    And, well --- when I went looking for one? . . . there were/are lots to choose from . . .

    So . . .

    My Badge

First up is what looks to me like the Real Deal . . . or? . . . the very best re-produ---- er, version.

Found recently at a Seller in Germany.

    1) The first and biggest thing that caught my eye about this badge was the back, for two reasons.
-- a. It's smooth. I don't know when the Makers stopped doing it, but all of my older badges have smooth, finished-looking backs. The pebbley/pimpley-backed ones seem to've come later
-- b. The citation of a designer --- I've never seen this and, even if the badge wasn't a genuine vintage bit, that citation alone would've been worth it

    2) The next thing that I noticed was the finish of the metal
-- a. All of the metal surfaces, front and back, are uniformly dull, and whatever polish or plating that was ever there has mellowed/worn-off . . . like an old coin
-- b. the metal separating the colors on the face . . .
--_-- i. . . . is roughly the same level as all the surrounding applied enamel
    --_-- ii. . . . has a subtle roughness to it --- not polished or chromed . . . almost ground

    3) The two mounting tabs on the sides have a delicate scribed relief to them. This badge appears to have been mounted at one time --- one of the tabs is a bit smooshed --- but this scribed detail is still visible, not present on any of the other N-badges that I've seen

    4) Whole badge has a slight but noticeable compound-convex curve when viewed from the front. I've seen lots o' flat(ter) badges

    5) Once I got my hands on it, something else --- thicker in the middle, thins-out out at it's edges. Lot of my other vintage badges are thick, stout, like coins, more uniform. Not this one. Thing also has a small sorta depression in the middle, where the citations are, then gets surprisingly thin/delicate towards the rim, fragile-looking/feeling

    6) And lastly, the font --- I didn't notice it until Mark Morrissey mentioned it, but I think that he nailed it . . . those 'G's are definitely squared-off, compared to the curvier/more stylized 'art-deco' ones found on others

    The Earliest Nürburgring Badge?

    . . . from 1927 (?) --- the year The Track first opened.

Basic elements, all there . . . Schloss Nürburg, the promontory, hills surrounding . . . just add the sunburst, timer's ring-and-pointer, paint green. 'Winged-wheel' below is ADAC's logo --- Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club. Very bitchin'

Deschler and Sohn, München 9 --- Deschler and Son, Munich 9

    Too obscure (I hope) to be properly (?) reproduced . . .

    Currently Available . . .

    . . . from Classico Wheels . . .

    http://www.classicowheels.com/specialtyparts.htm

Bought one of their R-replica steering wheels for my car --- very nice. Noticed this Nürburgring badge on their site, otherwise --- no affiliation . . .

    Notice . . .
    1) . . . chromey/smooth/highly-polished finish to all metal surfaces
    2) . . . apparent relief between 'enamel' and metal
    3) . . . heavily-textured back . . .
    4) . . . and nothing stamped --- no Maker's mark

    An Old Badge

Jerry Haussler and I talked about Old Badges recently. Jerry's been into badges for as long as I can remember, since waaay back in my 356-days, and he'd said that he thought that Donner had produced Nurburgring badges (and they weren't the 1st?) for a long time --- 20 (make that 60!) years or more (and I tend to agree) --- so one would expect to see variations in their product . . .

    . . . Like this lovely battle-scarred/patinated veteran . . .

    Notice . . .
    1) . . . just how thick the enameling is at the 'chip'
    2) . . . that all the metal and enamel surfaces are level with one another --- no reliefs . . . except at the 'chip'
    3) . . . that the mounting tabs appear flat --- no scribed detail
    4) . . . the unfinished, non-pebbled back
    5) . . . the Donner stamp, inside the 'wing' on the back

    A 'Wreathed' Badge

    An interesting variation . . . labeled 1965 . . .

Tough to tell from this photo --- but this badge looks 'flat.'

On the other hand, this is more like what I would expect a 45-year-old enamel finish to look like --- especially the white . . . bit 'krusty'

    Lesser Vintage Badges

Interesting version with a variation of the Kollbach citation . . . and beautifully finished.

Couple problems. The 'jr' (after Kollbach) is left off . . . and looks like they they miss-spelled Münzpräge on the back --- needs an umlaut over the 'a'

    Also, just a little too shiny . . .

    Another Lesser Vintage Badge . . .

. . . from the late 90's? (Only have this shot --- sorry.)

Unsure what the numbers mean . . .

    MS PRINT 07141 85100

    0760

Maybe a part number (?) on top --- or an 'edition' or 'run' identifier (?) --- with an individual sequence number on the 2nd line (?)

UPDATE: Turns out the current German Merchandise licensee's badge has a similar identification on the back of its product --- see post #13

    Another Older Badge . . . .

    . . . that I've come across.

More crummy photos, but notice . . .
    1) . . . the 'G's on the front
    2) . . . the condition of the green enamel
    3) . . . the tabs
    4) . . . the Maker's mark --- a stamped non-Donner?
