Going through some old Excellence mags, I found an article in the October 2010 issue by my friend Cris Huergas about a black 73 RS he saw at the now gone Monterey Historics back in 1985. Cris describes a car that was modified using the R Gruppe philosophy...when the owner bought a set of Mahle 10.3 P&Cs, and along with opened TBs and stacks, a modified MFI pump, built an engine (Lukes and Shorman) that produced 263 hp with 213 lb-ft torque on Jerry Woods dyno using 92 octane pump gas.

WOW, very impressive! Not sure I can achieve that HP with my build, but it would be nice to come close. The article is really well written with pics by Randy Wells, and describes in great detail the journey the owner made over many years with this beautiful Carrera RS. If you have back issues, it is worth finding again for another read.

    Compression is your friend.

Ask Jim Breazeale about the Lukes and Shoreman lump in his 356. They could build an engine with the best of them. Back in the day it was a name you could drop and get a rise out of any "enthusiast" with a Porsche just like mentioning "Miller and Norburn" if you were a BMW aficionado.

Interesting to read John Daniels name in the early days of SSI.

    Tom,

The engine retained the 'S' cams, and had a Marelli twin plug dizzy, but no indication that ports were opened up in the first engine rebuild that achieved 263 hp at 6500 rpm. That is 97 hp per liter, which is very impressive for an S cam 10.3 CR engine. Later the owner had Billy McNair of European Performance in Novato, CA rebuild the engine by opening the ports to 39 mm, reworking the MFI pump, putting in a larger oil pump. He also opened mag stacks, installed a pair of mod S cams, and mounting SSIs feeding a stock Liestritz muffler. No HP output was stated in the article after the McNair modifications, but one would assume there was some gain.

Randy Wells describes the ride (after the McNair mods) as follows: "The high compression twin plug 2.7 pulls hard----no, rockets----to 7000 rpm. Everything a stock '73 RS has, this RS has more of...the push to your lower back, the mechanical injection's glorious high-strung noises, the sheer speed."

While the LY ST is on the lift with the engine out...I drove the 77 3.0 WB today for the first time since the surgery (5 weeks)....no problems...yeah!! It's the only 911 running right now in my stable of 3 cars, and it was grin from ear to ear FUN! Arizona is in it's full green mode now, and the farmers are working hard to take advantage of the prime growing season. I love driving out through the farm country around my home...it kind of reminds me of growing up in southern Indiana with acre after acre of cultivated fields, except for the mountains.

Lit Show next week....so looking forward to it!!

The 2.7 engines that we built at the dealership in the mid 70s used the 90mm Mahle ("235hp" on the box) P/C. I think they were 9.5 CR or so. We dyno tuned the engines and they routinely made 250hp with stock S cams, modified pump, and some port matching/clean up. The engines pulled smooth and torquey to the limiter at 7300. The 4000 surge was there but not anything like a 2.0S or 2.2S.
(We had a famous engine builder build one with quite a bit head milling/porting and some cam retard and dynoed at 275hp.....I was there at the dyno room).
I know dynos are different but this was the one that dynoed stock engines at < 3% of stock....We deemed it trustworthy.

BTW, I don't think McNair's mods made any more power but they did make the car much more drivable.....That is what Randy was feeling, the drivability.
One of the more expensive builds that I know of....

When I was getting back into this hobby for the second go around about 15 years ago, first thing I did was start buying up parts to build a fun hot rod. I bought a mildly hot rodded 2.7 MFI motor - made about 250 dyno HP - paid a princely sum of $4300 for the motor, if only we could go back in time.
