Not to knock the guy who wants to mix modern features to make them more year round enjoyable, I just see them as special event cars...either a track/road event or a 2-3 hour rip through back country twisting roads like your special test circuit offers.
I'm with you on all of the above...and your 2.5, even in the fog, had me at hello. Just have (personally) never really understood stables full of remarkably similar cars —*unless storage space and $$ are simply not an issue. That said, the LY Toad Hall cars look great...that meatball setup on the decklids above is epically cool.

Hmm, like the Sporto idea. Only driven one, but could see where it might be fun with the right engine...

The 72 ST body for me is the best of the long hoods that Porsche built. Whether used for street, track, or rally work, they always look 'cool'. I know that I will not own any car forever, and that once built into an ST body with the proper fitments, (with single plug rally engine or twin plug race type), they will live on in someone's stable as a cherished piece of automotive art. Most likely they will never be crushed....(unless we run out of gasoline.) All the long hoods are 'similar cars', so it comes down to colors, and small details to differentiate between stable mates.

I will have to admit that what drives me is the passion to build something that fits the R Gruppe theme....taking a stock 911 and modifying it with the Sports Purpose Parts available from the factory (or good reproductions) to something that could have existed in the day as a factory or private offering....but now could not be afforded by the average 'Bloke". No 964 3.6s, no Motronic, no Motec, no Varioram, just period stuff from that list.

It's the journey, not the destination that gives me the most satisfaction. And when I get too many in the stable, most likely there will be someone out there who will want one of these carefully thought out long hood 911s. If not, I have a couple of sons who would love to have one of them.

PS: Raj, I don't think there were any Sporto trannies listed on the Sports Purpose Parts list.

Gib, you've hit the nail on the head with simplicity and clairity and in doing so, summed up the passion about as well as I've ever heard from anyone ... I can't wait to watch you work your magic.

    Thumbs up

    Gib,

    A little late but....

Here's a couple of pages out the Jan. '73 Porsche Pandemonium, then the news letter, now the magazine, of the Orange County chapter of the PCA.

This news letter came with my car.........

Danny McLaughlin of A.I.R. (the guy who put on my fenders in '73) wasn't the only guy in SoCal that was making ST's back in the day ....

    Cheers

Chuck, thanks for posting those old ads...I really like the Bill Yates ad. Looks like a few guys were doing R Gruppe mods back in the day.

Here are some shots showing the ST flares taped to the body with the early GT Racing bumper clamped in place. This is a fun stage just playing around with the look and letting the vision become a little clearer.
