Thread: Light Yellow ST in Progress

Many of you have done business with Kurt Donohoe owner of Partsklassik in Flagstaff, AZ. Here is a pic of Kurt when he came to my shop to 'tune' the 40 Webers after his rebuild of these. They look like jewelry. Kurt is a very knowledgeable Weber guy, and willing to go the extra mile to back up his products and services.

Pulled the drive train today...and now ready to remove the tranny, carbs and tin pieces for transport to my engine builder's shop.

The Webers are for sale if anyone is interested...made in Italy, 40 IDTP3C and C1, with 34 venturies, 60 idles, 145 mains, 140 air correction, F26 emulsion tubes. The manifolds are early PMOs with 36 mm bore at bottom.

I drove up to Ollies Machine Shop in Lake Havasu, AZ on Monday...it is always fun to see all the work going on and chat with the guys there. Like last year when I took the 3.0 RS engine up there, there were at least 50 cases sitting on the shop floor, and many, many other parts to be cleaned, inspected, and machined. I took the engine case, crank, heads, early intermediate shaft, rods, cam boxes, rockers, the Mahle 10.3 P&Cs, flywheel, pressure plate, etc so that the complete rotating mass can be balanced. I also took the Solex cams that were in this 2.7L engine for them to inspect. They appear to be in excellent shape, but I wanted the experts to determine that they are in spec because I will be offering these for sale when I get them back from Ollies.

My brother bought this 2.7L early aluminum case engine after the build was completed along with an 1850 lb 914 track car around 2001. I helped him get it to AZ (he lives in Tucson), and he began doing DE events with the car. He is a retired Ford Engineering Mgr. and kept very detailed notes about the DE activity with the car. The car posted FAST TIME OF DAY at a couple of Porsche DE events around AZ, and was driven in about 7-8 events between 2001 and mid 2002. It showed 192 RWHP (approx. 226 hp at flywheel) on 2 dyno day events in AZ with the 40 Webers and Solex cams. The engine was then pulled out of the car, and a hot 2.8L engine installed, so this engine was set off in a quiet corner of his shop to run no more until I bought it.

The engine doesn't really have much time/(miles) on it (maybe 15 hrs), and it showed when we opened it up. The pistons were JEs, and have essentially the same dome as the 10.3 Mahles I just purchased, and they look almost new except for some carbon on the domes. I am selling these JEs to a friend for his 2.7L twin plug engine. The case had the oil bypass and squirter mods done, so it only needs inspected for all the bearing tolerances (hopefully), and MFI studs welded on to mount the pump. I will use 4 bearing cam boxes, along with a Mod S pair of cams.

Pics attached of one of the JEs (brighter and before carbon removed) next to one of the Mahle pistons (more gray). Mahle on the left in pic 1, and on the right in pic 2.

My friend and automotive artist Nicolas Hunziker has completed a painting commission for the 72 LeMans #41 Toad Hall ST owner Marco. Nic's work is always inspiring, and he continues to do the 'Art & Canvas' feature in Pano every month. He did the brief interview with Michael Keyser and painted the 72 Targa Florio Toad Hall ST (#23) in the May 2015 issue.

One of my favorite pics of the Toad Hall ST in action is this one from the 73 Daytona 24 where Michael Keyser finished 8th overall. You can clearly see the wear and tear from a years worth of competition in Europe and the US. It would be the last race for this 72 ST driven by Keyser as he rec'd his new ride, a Light Yellow 73 RSR for the 73 Sebring race.

Gib, those are great pics. Do you have any more of his 73 RSR?
