I will be looking for you in the paddock, or @ Frank's under his awning, or on the streets of Elkhart at the two vintage car shows.

As to what to do in Florida after Parade :
    a) Run down to the Keys on the historic bridge between isles

    b) Scoot over Alligator alley to 'my part of the world' by Marco Island.
Visit the Smallwood Store, the Everglades on an airboat ride, or head over to Naples and drive up and down Gordon Drive and see how the other 1/2 % lives. And you cannot miss out on a sunset cruise out the Harbor into the Gulf on the Naples Princess.... nothing like it !

    c) Join me for lunch @ one of the quaint little restaurants in Naples on 5th Street downtown. I'll buy if you show up (-;

    d) take a drive thru Clermont, Howie-In-The-Hills and run the twisty back roads thru the forests. The abandoned Howie Family mansion is a sight to behold.

    e) drive some lonely two lines thru the back country around Ocala and Tallahassee on the way home. The forested areas are enchanting. And NO traffic ( but watch for the baby javelinas and deer)

    See you there !
    Best Regards,

An Old Box, A Surprise, An Old Treasure

It is cool and breezy in Chicago, a good day to straighten the attic.

What is in that small box? What is in that package?

Oh my gosh, a Porsche grill badge and a note! Where did this come from?

In the envelope was a "sold to" note dated July 20, 1966 for a Porsche 356, Jim's first Porsche.

In 1969, Jim was stationed at Fort Richards-Gebaur. He was the only enlisted soldier with a Porsche, a 356.
An officer on the base also owned a Porsche and convinced Jim to join PCA.

The envelope from PCA is stamped June 12' 1969.
Upon joining PCA, he either purchased the grill badge or it was a new member's gift.
I don't think it was ever used but it will be.

As soon as the correct nuts and bolts are found, this treasure is going on the sepia 911.
It will be fun to rearrange the grill badges.

By the way, the name on the note still lives in the Chicago area. A call was placed and a message left. I wonder what will happen?

    What a special surprise,

    Crazy Connections--Bill and Gloria Tuttle

The man and his wife called me back, and he did sell Jim the 356.
They are still into cars but now his wife drives and shows early Model T's.
    Charming people, fun conversation.

In talking with them, the names Bill and Gloria Tuttle popped up.
    I recognized those names.
Bill owned a repair shop and Gloria raced with SCCA at Road America in the early 1960s.

Does anyone know anything about the Tuttles?
Was the shop in Park Forest or Flossmoor, IL?
If I remember correctly, Jim found the 356 through the Tuttles.
And, I think he sold them his 1966 911.

    Amazing long-ago trivia,

72 Targa it does look nice on the 911!

I have been asking friends for leads on Bill and Gloria Tuttle. It is interesting what people remember from 50 years ago especially about a foreign car repair shop. Bill and Gloria Tuttle raced an Evo-Porsche in SCCA races in the midwest in the '60s and '70s. People remember Gloria more than Bill because she was an early woman racer and raced wearing bowling ball shoes.

A friend gave me the name and number of one of Bill Tuttle's mechanics. Next week, I will contact him hoping he remembers a 1966 dove gray Porsche 911. At that time, there weren't many Porsches in the far south suburbs of Chicago. Maybe I will get lucky and he will remember the car. If I remember the story correctly, Jim sold the '66 to the Tuttles to purchase the '73 911 that I now drive.

By the way, tiny fasteners (nuts) are frustrating to screw on!

    The picture book

2018 was a stellar year with the 911. Sepia was driven almost 3,000 miles. It was a joy to drive her and meet so many interesting characters. The 911 trophied at Ault Park in Cincinnati, Parade, Road America, and local cruise nights. I enjoyed it all.

Picture books are a favorite of mine, I get lost in the photos. Of course, there has to be a book about a little brown car. During the summer of 2017, photographs were take of the 911 in four Chicago neighborhoods. We were all up at 4:00 a.m. driving into the city by 5:00, in position waiting for the sun to come up by 6:00, and napping by 3:00.

The eight books are almost finished. Besides the professional photographs, each book had some blank pages and family photographs were included. It took forever to find the photos and get everything pulled together. I am still working on a list of everyone that drove Sepia. It won't be 100% but it will be close. Such a crazy idea. One of my most favorite parts of the car is the heel-worn spot on the driver's carpet. I wonder whose heel rested on that spot ... such feelings of continuity with the interconnected circles of family, friends, and mechanics. The members of The Early 911S Registry understand my attachment to an old, worn carpet pad. What things are you attached to?

The garage photograph was taken at Root Brothers Garage on 35th Street. It is a working garage and has been in the family for over 100 years. The walls are covered with paintings of sunrises over Lake Michigan. Besides being a mechanic, the owner, Mike, is an artist and has a muscle car collection. He lives kitty corner from the garage and a catwalk connects his house to it. So interesting! (The light hit the two sides of the photo differently.)

    More to come,

    Beneath the dan ryan expressway

    Name: UNDER THE RYAN (1).jpg

There is so much going on in this picture. This photograph was taken beneath the Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Branch of the Chicago River. On the other side of the river is the Ozinga Concrete Plant. The red boat just happened to be chugging down the river. It might be a Chicago Fire Department Boat or a tour boat. I hope to find its name.

When the photographers mentioned driving underneath the Ryan, my first thought was no way. But, we scouted it out and I very slowly drove the car down the gritty road. As the photographers were working, I sat in a chair waving at the canoes, kayaks, tour boats, and tug boats.

The location is 2398 South Grove Street, Chicago, Illinois. It can be found on Google Maps. Just navigate down the road towards the blue building and look to the right. Hollywood movies and television shows are filmed in the large warehouse on the right.

    More to come,
