    New Tires & Maintenanc

After the St. Charles Parade, new Michelin XWXs were ordered from Coker Tires. Didn't know about date stamped tires. Didn't check the dates. When the car was checked out last spring, I learned the tires are dated 2007. Four new XWXs will be ordered and installed this spring.

Every year, the 911 is checked out by Precision Porsche Service. The list for this year is:

•Check all the mechanical components and fluids.

    Pick away at other things--

•Replace the K&N air filter with a Porsche filter.
•Get the engine bay light working. When the bulb burned out, it wasn't replaced--too many dead batteries because I forgot to turn it off. Safer.
•Investigate why the seat belt light isn't working. I can't ever remember it buzzing. Is there a buzzer?
•Finally, do something about the carpet pads. Been dithering too long about getting replacements. The original ones will be put away.

Something always pops up with this old 911.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.

    Anthropomorphism

Twice a month, I meet with a writing group. None of them were familiar with Sepia's story.
    They challenge me.

Today, I was asked, "Do I talk to the 911? Do I talk to Jim?"

    How could I not?

Why isn't that included in the narrative?

That question lead to a discussion of my personal relationship with the little brown car.

How do I weave my feelings and personal thoughts into this story rather than just describing the experiences?

    I guess I will try.

My question is this: Are their any stories, books or articles that deal with this -- a more personal relationship with an automobile?

I know of a man whose Sunday morning ritual is taking a coffee into the garage and gazing at an old Porsche.

    What is he thinking?

    Buzz ...

The seat belt buzzer was a sound I never heard.
It was on the list of things to fix.
It is now working and so annoying.
    And, confusing to use.
Thanks to Larry Marzano, I know where the "thig-a-ma-jig" is and it can be removed.

This is what I have learned--
If the key is in the ignition and the engine is off, it buzzes.
If they key is in the ignition, the engine is running, and the hand brake is engaged, it doesn't buzz.
(I guess that is so the oil can be checked.)

Before long, it will be disconnected!

My wife sometimes asks me that question. For some reason she seldom believes me if I answer "nothing." I tell her my mind is generating only a low level hum. Gazing at a nice car can do that to a guy.

Hmm ... Meditating on a Porsche is a good thing to do!

    First Time Ever ...

And it had to happen to me. Last Sunday on the way home from a Cars & Coffee, the 911 began to hesitate and backfire. I didn't know what was wrong, but I knew to get off of 294 to a safe place. Someone once told me, Porsches hardly ever stop due to mechanical failure. They were so right! It kept on going to the nearest Jimmy John's parking lot. Hagerty Roadside Assistance was called, the car was towed to Larry Marzano's shop and repaired. The 911 is now back in the garage. It was just an old wire/connection that needed to be replaced.

On my part, there is a renewed respect and appreciation for Porsche engineering, Hagerty Insurance, and Larry Marzano. Everything worked out. My personal comfort and confidence in driving an early 911 grew tenfold.

The tow truck driver said, "This is the nicest car I ever towed."
