    The top car is a 550A and the second is the original design the RS550. Although they were both build by Wendler for Porsche, they were very much different designs as others have pointed out earlier in the thread - especially the frame design. The main purpose of the more bulbous nose was so it could fit a spare tyre there in front of the fuel tank. The RS 550 originally had the spare in the rear. In the early racing days, it was required that the drivers carried a spare and a full tool kit, even though they were rarely used.     Thank you very much. That answers my question. Thanks for saving me from having to re-read that book, which I would need to wait until holiday to retrieve.
