Here we offer a unique piece of history: the very first Porsche 911 Targa – ancestor of a legendary series and eponym of an entire vehicle category.
In 1962, the Porsche began thinking about the future of the new 911 convertible. After a long period of development and various ideas, they decided on the version with a fixed roll bar and removable roof. In September 1965, Porsche presented the first “Targa” at the IAA in Frankfurt. The name “Targa” was perfectly chosen. On the one hand, it means shield in Italian – which perfectly matches the safety aspect of the new type of targa bar and roof. On the other hand, the name also reminded of Porsche’s successes at the Targa Florio races. Today the term stands for a whole class of vehicles, as several other manufacturers adopted the design principle and also started building vehicles with targa roofs.
Porsche started a new number range for the new Targa model, starting with 500001 – exactly this car, making it the real number 1.
We asked Jochen Bader, an absolute expert for the early Porsche 911 models, to assess the car. He was head of the Porsche Classic workshop for many years and as such responsible for the factory restorations at Porsche. He is one of the most experienced specialists in the evaluation of Porsche automobiles and is on assignment by numerous collectors worldwide to examine the originality and condition of special classics of the Porsche brand.
Together we have found many special details on the vehicle that differ from the later series production and show the prototype status.
On the one hand, there are numerous small details on the vehicle which are otherwise only found on 911 coupés up to mid-1965 and which, in combination with the Targa body, are therefore something very special. Among others, these are the wood trim on the dashboard, the simple knee pad and the non-adjustable strut domes. As series production only started in 1967, these early details are not to be found on Targas from the series production.
Because of the many 1965 details Jochen Bader and we are sure that this car offered by us was built in mid 1965. The exact date of construction is not known, because Porsche only documented the date of delivery and not the date of completion back then.
There is also a report that the following chassis number 500 002 was used for test drives by developer Helmut Bott in September 1965, which also shows that our car was built before that date.
Apart from the 1965 details, this car also differs from the later production cars in some details specific to the Targa, such as
– the Targa bar has no air vents
– the “Soft-Window” is constructed differently and has a wooden bow
– the Targa roof is not foldable
According to the Porsche delivery confirmation, the car was used by Porsche as test vehicle and was not sold until July 13, 1967. Interestingly, the buyer was the Volkswagen company in Wolfsburg. On the Kardex there is also a record of a service executed in 1969 by the Porsche dealer Müller. This is probably the dealer Petermax Müller located in Hanover, a one-hour drive away. The further history is very well documented by the old registration document and a list from the Federal Office for Motor Vehicles.
The car always remained in the same region within Northern Germany. After the car was deregistered in 1979, the penultimate owner put it into store. 22 years later, in 2001, he sold the car as a restoration project to the current owner. The current owner documented the condition of the car with numerous photos at the time of purchase and collection. Immediately after the purchase, he had the car restored by a renowned German restoration company specialized in Porsche. The restoration lasted from February 2001 to May 2003 and is very well documented with pictures and invoices.
This car is a very important piece of Porsche history and we are happy to be able to offer you this rare specimen.
