    FEATURED MEDIA
Sports Car Graphic, December 1965, “Driver’s Report 911 & 912,” by Jerry Titus

    THIS CAR
Porsche’s replacement for its 356 model dates to as early as 1959, under the project name “Technical Project 7,” or simply “T7.” Drawings dating from this period, penned by Ferdinand A. “Butzi” Porsche, gave life to a new larger model to be powered by a two-liter flat-six that would also be the cornerstone of Porsche’s ever-aspiring racing ambitions. Testing of the new car began in late 1962, and the 901 (soon to be renamed the 911) made its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September 1963. Upon its release, the 911 became an immense success that continues to the present day. Of the dozens of evolutions and derivatives that have followed, the earliest short-wheelbase examples are especially prized for their genius of design and purity of concept.

This 1965 911 Coupe is one of the highly desirable early production 300 Series cars. The COA and Kardex show that chassis 300845 was completed on April 13, 1965, with engine no. 901011, which it retains today. It was painted Sky Blue (Emailblau 6403) with black leatherette and Pepita cloth inserts.

Competition Motors, based in Culver City, California, first sold 300845 to Karl Davis of Manhattan Beach, California. Mr. Davis collected the new 911 at the factory via the company’s European delivery program, and upon his return he traded it toward another car. However, 300845 continued to gain recognition, as it was featured later in 1965 on the cover of Sports Car Graphic. In the ensuing decades, this 911 has remained with a few California-based owners, all Porsche devotees. Notably among those was automotive journalist and racer Rick Titus, son of much-admired Jerry Titus of the Terlingua Racing Team. In 1999, the car was acquired by collector John Clinard, a Ford Motor Company executive and long-standing Pebble Beach judge.

Mr. Clinard retained Porsche experts to restore the 911, having the engine and transaxle rebuilt, and the body stripped and refinished in Sky Blue Glasurit paint. The consignor purchased the coupe in April 2016, and completed the restoration, including re-trimming the entire interior to its original specification. In May 2019, the 911 participated in Luftgekühlt 6, where it was displayed in a prime location on the backlot of Universal Studios in the shadow of the famed clock tower that was used for the setting of the 1985 film Back to the Future. Documented with restoration invoices, and accompanied by a partial tool kit and manual and the black plate it wore in the December 1965 article, this highly desirable early 1965 911 would surely delight any Porsche purist.

    BaT Description:

This 1966 Porsche 911 was delivered new in December 1965 and has been owned by the same family for the past 41 years. The car was originally sold by Competition Motors of Culver City, California and was purchased by the current owner’s grandfather in 1978. Power is provided by a numbers-matching 2.0L flat-six, which is equipped with a Solex induction system and mated to the original 5-speed manual transaxle. A Webasto heater was optioned from the factory, and the car is equipped with a set of 1967 911S Fuchs wheels. Service in 2016 included rebuilding the brakes and carburetors, as well resurfacing the flywheel and a valve adjustment. The current owner has added approximately 2k miles since acquiring the car 10 years ago, and he is being represented in this auction by a friend. This 911 is now offered with service records dating back to the 1970s, a handwritten mileage log, a certificate from Porsche North America, and a clear Ohio title.

According to the included records, the body was repainted white in 1968, and then once more in 1987. Evidence of the original Golf Blue is visible in the door jambs and hood. Early cars received four-screw horn grilles, 356 horns, different door latches and strikers, and front bumper ballast weights, which remain installed on this car. Noted issues include an inoperable wiper system and passenger-side tail lamp. This 911 is equipped with a set of 15×4.5” Fuchs wheels from an early 911S, and the included chrome spare wears a 1965 date stamp. New brakes rotors and rebuilt front calipers were installed in 2016.

The black interior is equipped with a set of factory low-back front seats. Closeups of the leatherette and basketweave upholstery are provided in the gallery below. Records indicate that the headliner has been replaced. A factory wood-rimmed steering wheel and period aftermarket Amco shift knob are installed. A Webasto gasoline heater was optioned when new, and the system remains plumbed and resides in the smuggler’s box. 65k miles are shown on the odometer. The fuel and oil level gauges are reported to register intermittently.

The aluminum-case 901/01 flat-six is equipped with a factory Solex induction system and associated double-head Pierburg fuel pump. An engine-out service in 2016 included resurfacing the flywheel, rebuilding the carburetors, and a valve adjustment. Blue smoke and oil consumption are noted by the seller. Engine stamping *903099* is shown, and the transaxle stamping is 225564. Both match the numbers on the certificate from Porsche, confirming their originality. A pair of Nadella axles remain installed, both of which were serviced in 2016. Additional photos outlining the condition of the floors, rockers, inner fenders, and suspension are provided. Service records dating back to the 1970s accompany the sale, along with a handwritten maintenance log kept by the current owner’s grandfather.

    Auction Description:

    - Only 3,937 miles recorded
    - Nicely optioned; very rare right-hand-drive example
    - Retains its matching-numbers drivetrain
    - Includes copy of Kardex and Certificate of Authenticity

This 1967 911 coupe is one of 3,421 examples produced for that model year’s “O-series” and one of significantly fewer with right-hand drive. It retains its original, numbers-matching Type 901/05 air-cooled flat-six with a chain-driven single overhead cam on each bank, dry-sump lubrication, and Weber carburetors, which replaced the earlier use of Solex overflow carbs in July 1966. The two-liter, eight-bearing engine delivers a wholly adequate 130 bhp at 6,100 rpm, along with 128 foot-pounds of torque at 4,200 rpm.

There is a five-speed, fully synchronized manual gearbox, rack-and-pinion steering, and a 16.4-gallon gas tank with an electric fuel pump. Sub-nine-second sprints to 60 miles an hour were easily achieved, with a maximum of 132 miles an hour available. The 911 always boasts superior braking, and the early models were no exception, with ATE disc brakes on all four wheels. Said Road & Track in 1966, “…the brakes are so uniformly excellent that no matter the road conditions, including undulating surfaces, the brakes pull the speed down surely, smoothly, without the slightest trace of unbalance or uneven pulling.”

This lovely 1967 short-wheelbase coupe was completed 1 August 1966 and sold new to Mr. J.W. Clark, a resident of Mount Royal, a suburb of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. While it is unclear why Mr. Clark ordered a right-hand-drive Porsche, the included factory Kardex and Certificate of Authenticity show that he specified a broad range of comfort and convenience options, suggesting that he may have planned to use the car for touring, possibly in the UK. These included headrests for both front seats; an outside thermometer; a pair of black leather suitcases that fit on the folded rear seats, and an “expander,” an elastic cord net to hold luggage in place; a sun visor with mirror, and a hand-held spotlight. Mr. Clark requested that the car be equipped with Koni shock absorbers; a pair of “automatic” seat belts; a wood-rimmed steering wheel; a Blaupunkt “New York” radio, speaker, and antenna; and a set of chromed steel wheels with crested hubcaps that were fitted with Phoenix tires. The Light Ivory paint was complemented by a Black leatherette interior.

The Kardex shows that the car was delivered and initially serviced in Germany, but reflects that the Porsche eventually crossed the Atlantic, where it was maintained by Porsche-VW of Canada in 1967 and 1968, when the odometer read a mere 2,113 miles. Its subsequent ownership history until the time it was purchased by Mr. John Dixon of the Taj Ma Garaj Collection in Ohio is unknown. At some point after its arrival in Canada, a factory-authorized Renair “Delanair” air-conditioning system was installed. While 1967 was the first year that air-conditioning became a factory option, these units were installed though the dealership.

Today this wonderful early 911 displayed an amazingly low 3,937 miles at the time of cataloguing, and based on the service records that accompany the car, there is every reason to believe that that is the correct total from new. A close inspection indicates no obvious body repairs, but testing with a paint meter found the paint thickness slightly heavier than the factory standard, indicating that the car may have had some freshening in the past. That fact was confirmed with a review of repair and maintenance invoices provided. The interior, including the headliner, carpeting, dash pads, door cards, and seat covers, appear to be original and in excellent condition, and the exterior trim is pristine. It is supplied with a copy of the factory Kardex and Porsche-issued CoA, a set of owner’s and air-conditioning operator’s manuals, a warranty book, spare, jack, and a tool kit.

This is quite likely the sole example of an early right-hand 911 with these factory options. With the rarely seen air-conditioning system and boasting such low mileage, it would surely warrant inclusion in any collection of high-performance European sports cars.

    Auction Description:

    - Highly desirable short-wheelbase 911
    - Recently completed professional restoration
    - Finished in striking Slate Grey over red leather
    - Retains its matching-numbers engine
    - Includes tool roll, jack, and spare

This 911 left the Porsche factory on 4 April 1966 and was delivered to a dealer in Culver City, California. The Porsche then moved to Aero V.W. Inc. in Inglewood, California, according to the copy of the Porsche Kardex. The previous owner retained this 911 for about a decade, having had the original 2.0-liter, 130 hp flat-six engine rebuilt by Power Tech in New Jersey. It was acquired by the current owner in 2015.

Although this 911 was in excellent condition when acquired, the current owner commissioned Coachworks Restorations to undertake a comprehensive restoration to match the 1965 911 that is on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Finished in Slate Grey over Red, no expense was spared to restore this 911 to perfection. Recently, an estimated 850 hours of professional time was spent to elevate this Porsche to the highest level of quality. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this classic 911. Since completion in early 2019, has only been driven test mileage and remains in pristine condition. The original factory tool kit and copy of the Kardex accompany the car.

Today, fine examples of the desirable early short-wheelbase 911s are in great demand worldwide. This Porsche is ideal for exhibition, club events, or rapid and enjoyable touring, and would make a great addition to any driving enthusiast’s collection.

    Auction Description:

*Beautifully and professionally restored inside and out and well documented. *Two owners from new
*Fitted with a freshly rebuilt 1968 2-liter motor in addition to its original, restored engine block
*Offered with the Porsche-issued Certificate of Authenticity, owner's manual, original Bilstein jack and tools

    THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

This Bahama Yellow over Black leatherette short-wheelbase 911 is one of the few '68 911s to be delivered new to the US in that year. Well optioned, with front and rear bumper horns, 911S oil tank and instrumentation, a wood steering wheel, tinted glass all around, stainless steel aprons, loudspeaker, and more, the 911 was originally acquired by Kim William Ketland of Riverside, California. Ketland would keep the 911 for 46 years and cover 53,463 miles in the car before selling it to the current owner on December 5, 2014. Shortly after taking delivery of the car, which had been off the road from 1982 until 2014, a down-to-bare-metal restoration was commenced. Photos of the car as it was collected are in the file.

The Porsche was disassembled, stripped to bare metal, and professionally restored. Genuine parts were used when available and care was given to ensure things were done right. The original engine block, which comes with the car, was restored but set aside for preservation with another 1968 rebuilt motor—only 15 digits different from the original block—that may be properly trashed without worry of originality fitted in the back. Resprayed and retrimmed back in its original colors, entire operation is documented with copious receipts, invoices, and photos in a 4+ inches thick binder.

In addition to the hefty binder of invoices and photos documenting the restoration work and history of the car, there are both original California Black Plates, two steering wheels—a wood rimmed one and a vinyl wrapped one, an owner's manual, two tool kits—one original and one new, the Bilstein jack, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity documenting the car. Fresh from the shop and ready to join its next owner, this rare short wheelbase 911 will unquestionably provide many miles of driving enjoyment to its next, lucky owner!
