Both the Targa bar and the large rear glass add a bit of reinforcement, Not a lot but some. I think the factory Cabriolet did have additional reinforcement on the inner rockers and some inside on the lower kick panels.
Maybe he just thought that as a Cab it's use would be more as a boulevard cruiser.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the car and am really glad you are restoring it to it's original Ruf spec. What color are you going with?

I am all for restoring it as a RUF. I Like restoring, building cars. I am not a religious fanatic about Original or patina for that matter. But I do like cars that are done correctly. What got my attention is that I am building a 1968 911 Targa. Extensive metal job. I am finding the differences from coupe to Targa and it is interesting what I have found out so far...… I have only worked on the rear section so far... The rockers and outer rocker supports are the same. The inner rocker support on the coupe is a relatively small vertical rocker support, were as the targa has a Bulk head, support that creats a double wall over the wheel housing arch. Also the rear parcel shelf/fire wall has a double wall reinforcement lateral strip a couple inches wide. And of course the support plates under the targa rollbar. That's all I have found so far for the rear of the car.... In the pictures above, RUF......all I see is gussets for the convertible top, and the targa bulk head etc. that would be on the stock targa.

As I recall, the last 356 Police/Cabriolets were built with double-paneled floors?

David, I don't think the glass does add anything in terms of reinforcement. It would crack then. Also, what about soft window targas? What do reinforce the body compared to Coupés are the details mentioned above by Bob and, of course, the bar but it would only add some lateral stiffness. I can't say anything about SC Cabriolet's reinforcements of '83. This car has been driven as such for 20 years, from '84 to '03 and happened nothing bad to it due to eventual lack of safety. Actually, it won't have a color that is of my taste (I would prefer a Gulf Orange, Continental Orange or Gulf Blue, my fave colors). It has to be painted to Ascot Grey Metallic corresponding to RUF specs on the invoice. It's a BMW color and too modern for a '72 car but in '84 when converted it was certainly rare and cool. Anyway, it won't be ugly with the full leather Cartier Red interior that will be the task of RUF Automobile again to carry out. I would only change top's color to grey. Its color isn't listed in the price list of invoice but as you can see it had a black top in 2011 when I bought it. I will ask Mr. Ruf to be sure about it but as he will make it again, it will be "genuine" anyway.

Please allow me to take opportunity to ask here. I'm looking for a perfect Blaupunkt Monterey SQR23 for the car because it's listed on its specs sheet. That model radio/cassette player wasn't rare in Porsches at all in the mid '80s, so an early911S member certainly might have one for sale.

new to this but What a fantastic thread and car. i would love a RUF and am very envious, congrats. You will be able to run 7 on the rear of this narrow body with correct offset but will have to watch tyre size. Also at this stage some light hidden reinforcement could be a consideration like seem welding or add some floor bracing that could be hidden either under a double floor or carpet but its your car of course so you should build to your requirements. I have a 964 speedster and these cars have strengthening in the chassis which is noticeable on the road when pushing hard. Look fwd to next update congrats again.

Thank you. You could be right. But in my opinion it's been made very well back then. Also to maintain its genuineness I should not interfere in its reinforcement. At the time it should have received a German TÜV certificate. The car is not indended for club racing just for regular driving. I'll ask Mr. Ruf about his standpoint in that matter. I don't think he would revise himself but I'll see. The car was equipped by RUF with 7" wheels all around, they're also listed in the invoice. I don't like them in front so 6" will be put there but, of course, I will keep the two 7-inchers for it.

Wonderful project! Good for you, Sambapati, for going this extensively. Alois Ruf is an historic Porsche builder and my personal favorite. Your car adds to his great story!

Just painted to Ascot Grey Metallic (of BMW), by the RUF specs back in 1984. This Thursday I'll have it polished and assembled with the doors, lids and front fenders. Then it will be visible how accurate the job is. Name: 48392358_282597965777711_1364199050500374528_n.jpg

    Thank you for the update.

Have you kept it a narrow body?
