FS - Carrera Abarth GT seat

Is this the same seat as in the '68 Waldegard rally car and also installed in the early 911's? It's listed on German EBay for $6,500.00....

    Hi Jeff,

I believe this one will fit a 356. The early 911 one is just like it only has wider seat tracks, really rare. I'll try to take some photos of the one in my white car.

Just to shed more light on the subject, I am attaching photos of my late 356 era GT seat. This is an original factory seat, unrestored with its black leather & charcoal carpet, probably just as it left Zuffenhausen in the 1960's. Unfortunately, we don't know what exact car this came from - I found it at Pomona some 20 years ago from a seller that had no clue as to what he had! I restored the metal base and used it briefly in my old 1965 356 C, so it fits all post '62 356 seats railings. You will see some small differences to the seat currently on German Ebay, other than the obvious corduroy inserts. I am talking about the metal fasteners used in that seat to hold the carpet in place, something which is not present in my unit.

Notice the unusual seat bottom construction in my unit. The metal (steel, not aluminum) surface has a large hole which was cushion with horsehair, allowing the pilot to have his rear end sit deeper into the seat while also providing a degree of comfort with the cushy horsehair! That part, at the bottom, is covered with a slim piece of vinyl, which is only seen if the seat is pushed up. Some fifty years later, the carbon fiber sport buckets seats in my '12 Spyder's could have used some of this old technology to make them a bit more comfortable.

I know early 911 buckets are rare but I can assure all of you that these late 356-era GT bucket seats are also in that same exclusive, ultra-rare club!

    Saludos,
    Eduardo
