    So why is the damper there in the first place? Backlash?

    I was just given a Sports Car Graphics magazine, December 65 where they claim Porsche added the damper on the 911, not 912, because the 911 "is effectively lighter on the front end" due to its heavier 405 lb 6-cyl engine.
