    2.4E to 2.7RS spec

This may have been asked before and Ive searched for info but cant find anything.

I have a 2.4E engine with 7R cases and am thinking about building to RS spec with MFI. Can anyone let me know what needs to be done?

I know it will need case work, TB and head work and the MFI pump will need redoing. What else is there? Can you reproflie the E cams to S spec?

Im guessing there are people on here that have done this so any advise would be greatly appreicated

    Cheers

for me with a 2.4 S it was simple P&C , space cam in the pump
For the E , more involved. P&C, space cam for MFI, heads, cams. Throttle bodies. Valves.
    not so sure about rods

My additional recommendation, if you decide to do this, I'd go for the 9.5 compression ratio Mahles instead of the stock RS 8.5. Additional kick for the buck.

Thanks for that David. Starting to collect parts for the conversion now so interesting to hear your thoughts on the 9.5 compression. Are they readily available? Ive seen a lot of 8.5 but no 9.5

Think carefully about your need for the S spec cams and hence RS spec engine.
I have a 2.7E...built by Bob Watson here in the UK... so no bias here
Did a quick comparison with an rebuilt RS (real one!) engine...power the same at was at c 220bhp (polished heads etc...with a range of 222 to 219 depending on day) with max torque of the E spec being higher and lower down the rev range... sure it tails off at the top end.

In day to day use the E spec 2.7 probably creates a faster car as the torque and power are more accessible. On the track the RS spec would have an advantage.
Certainly suits my needs more closely than an RS spec. It is, as its builder states... 'a beast'....

Could one go with the RS 2.7 P/C's and MFI pump, yet keep the E cam?

I have something close to what silver911 has (and have had it in this spec for almost 15 years now)
It started as a 2.4E but had the 2.7 (Mahle) P&C's a genuine (NOS) RS spec MFI pump cam (not sure how available they are these days or how different they may be to an S spec one) and S throttle bodies. However we left the E cams in it and I think that was a great decision. In the last couple of years i have also had the bigger bore Dansk "sport" 2 in one out exhaust mated to stock heat exchangers.

I have never had it tested back to back against a genuine RS however the E cam certainly gives it a very strong bottom end and makes it a very usable road car. It does give up something at the top end - but the performance there would only be available on the track anyway and this car does not get used there.

The change to the big "sport" exhaust added a more aggressive note and seems (bottom of pants feel) to have given it a bit more urge, especially in the 3K to 5K range, but may have detracted a bit from torque at the very bottom end (ie under 1500RPM). I am not sure about that as it may be it just added enough up higher to give that impression but i feel that i have to give it a bit of extra RPM off the line now for a smooth start than in the past.

That said it is a fantastic setup especially for a road car.

I 'think' that is what Bob did to create my 2.7E...
The case was machined to accept the 2.7 P+Cs.. along with mods for greater oil flow (I think..)
Heads were polished and ported to improve airflow to make the most of the additional capacity.

I'm running SSIs and I think a 'sport' stainless exhaust.. not certain its Dansk... too many years have passed since it was fitted.

Even though its only an E I am now well acquainted with the rev limiter...
