How To - Searching on the S Registry forums

Maybe Chuck will make this a sticky, maybe it will get flushed, but here goes:

Here is my attempt to help people get the most out of the incredible wealth of info on this forum. I've found that when I answer a question for someone I am sometimes doing the legwork I describe below.

While it's certainly possible to ask the forum a question by posting a new thread, often times the question has been answered numerous times in the past. With a little effort, one can get great answers and learn all sorts of other things in the process of their search. And it's actually incredibly efficient once you get the hang of it.

I'm definitely not against posting a question and enjoy debate and discussion on all sorts of topics here. I guess I'm just more of a 'do it myself' kinda guy and like the thrill of the hunt for the answer. So here goes:

    1. Don't expect the best results when using this site's built in search feature. It's just how it is. For example, search '901 gear ratios' and see what comes back.

Not exactly what you were looking for, huh?

    2. Now instead, try using a highly refined Google search. Type the following in Google search:
    site:early911sregistry.org 901 gear ratios.

And look what comes back... Much better than in #1, eh?

The site:<name of website> filter clears out all the background noise on the internet and focuses Google's power on one site with your search criteria.

I hope this is useful to someone.

    Very helpful, Bryce

I've used the search feature on our site, a lot . . . but it usually brings back too many results --- although, I don't always mind

But using google to dig stuff up for us? . . . . you're such a smarty pants

    Nahh... it's all perspective.

While someone else is driving a Mars rover via remote control from 250 million miles away, I can at least share a forum search tip

There is an amazing amount of information on the EarlyS site and I am one of those people who enjoy the pursuit of knowledge about the cars . The google search is a very good tip. I was having problems finding the pictures from Cornpanzer ( David Conklin) that he posted of the amazing 700 mile S. I googled : early911S cornpanzer 700 mile S - and I was able to find them . Thanks for the google tip. But.... how do I find all the other photo collections of other low mile original cars? Probably some of the best information of what is original is looking at pictures of these low mileage original cars. It would be incredible to create a photo library of the very original cars to have a reference source for the rest of us trying to get our cars back to some form of former glory. This is an incredible site - I am glad that I have found Porsche owners that are even more "crazy" than I am.

I will do my best to help direct people in the right direction
In general I think this thread should be highlighted a lot more!! 650 views in how long, 6 months?? is way too low!
It´s stuff like this that transforms how people use this forum. The last weeks a have done a lot of testing, and I now find everything I´m looking for, both here at on Pelican. It´s simply amazing.

Chuck, you read this. Anything we can do to highlight this thread a bit more??

    Thanks again!
