    $25000 for a historic (winter) rally car, what’s your pick?

    Hi,

    I’m very happy with my original 1970 911S but with the prices going up so fast, I’m getting more and more hesitant to drive it during extreme conditions.
    I have no qualms driving my car every day and in rain, but weekend races/rallies with hail and during winter on salted snow roads are too taxing on the car and not safe without a roll bar and good seats.
    We actually have a bare '67 912 shell in the garage but I don't think I would get very far within this budget. Not to mention the extremely expensive parts when something breaks.

    So I wonder what the early911s registry would choose in this situation. A car from 1975 or earlier would be preferred.

    current contenders are:

    Alfa 2000 Berlina - 2L, 140hp, not necessarily pretty but very affordable.


    Austin Mini Cooper (S replica) - classic, everyone seems to love it, unfortunately fwd


    Saab 96 v4 - a 2 stroke would be FUN but not enough power... also fwd


    Datsun 240Z


    Escort Mk1 would be nice but everything that shows up is WAY out of the price range.
    What am I missing, what would you pick?

    For $25k you could buy a few of the above...having owned many of the SAABS, I know you could pick up the nicest one on the planet for half your budget

    For the fun factor of rwd, cheap parts, and relative bulletproof chassis and drivetrain I think the 240Z makes a lot of sense. There is a guy who I've seen at the last 4 or 5 New England Forest Rallies (Rally America) in an early Z and he always seems to finish near the sharp end of the field. Always beating much newer Subarus and Mitsubishis, and he never seems to have many mechanical problems. Pretty amazing in an early 70's car.

    Plus you can paint it to resemble the Works team cars similar to the one in your photo. Plenty of history too; Safari, Monte Carlo, Southern Cross - maybe you could lure Jean Todt away from the FIA to be your co-driver.

    What is your cutoff date?

    1974 911S would fit the bill.
    If acceptable, I would have to agree with deJong....

    'Early' 911s have been totally dominating historic rallying ...

    Buy a 'cheep' 911, keep it stock, and put the rest of the money in suspension and safety stuff.....

    Had a chance to talk to racer/ex-racer Danny Sullivan at the Dana Point show and he said that both he and his wife are campaigning early rally 911s in the UK. and having a blast....

    The idea of a 1974 is interesting and didn't cross my mind yet. I'm not sure if those cars are available for less than 20k € here in Europe, but i will check. What concerns me is that any Porsche (and any other car for that matter) will start to rust with the rough winters and salty roads. Fixing a rusty 911 is going to be very expensive compared to, say, a Saab 96 where you can get rust free replacement shells for 1500€. Not to mention the engine rebuilds...

    My cutoff date is '75, but something older than '69 would be even better.

    Now that I think about it, the 914 with a 6-cyl swap would be quite interesting too!

    Thank you for the valuable input so far... would love to hear some more ideas.

    Love it! That particular car is a bit too expensive, but what a car. It would be perfect. I will keep an eye out for the bertones, but I think most of them are quite expensive already, or they are complete rustbuckets.


    and as for the 911 you posted Chuck, I would buy that in a heartbeat if it wasn’t for the US to EU shipping/import/tax/customs trouble.

    I found this Saab 96 relatively close to me. 1961 with a 2-stroke engine, FIVA pass and all. They are hilarious little cars to me, but I’m afraid that 38hp will be unbearable once the novelty of the sound wears off.

    I can hardly wrap my head around the fact that this car won Monte Carlo 5 years before the 911 did. The difference between the two cars in terms of performance feels like 25 years or more.
