Barnfind 911S chassis 310001S in South Africa

    Good day to Fellow Members

i am Greg Bailey From RSA

Earlier this year my father and I were fortunate enough to stumble upon a barnfind 911.
i will put some pics up tomorrro, as they on another pc.

We bought it with the intention of building it into a race car. A few days after purchasing it, we discovered that it was a special chassis number 310001S. after buying several Porsche books and scanning the net there was almost no place that listed this chassis number except a website called Simons SC site.
    1967
    VIN from To
    911 Coupé et Coupé S 305 101 308 522
    911 S Coupé (try) 310 001
    911 S Coupé (try) 320 001 320 009
    911 Coupé (4 places) 320 010 320 020
    911 Targa (try) 330 001
    911 Targa and S Targa 500 001 500 718
    912 VIN from To
    912 Coupé 354 001 355 601
    912 Coupé Karmann 458 101 463 204
    912 Targa 550 001 550 544

    http://www.adelgigs.com/911vin_numbers.shtml

We then decided to take the car to our friendly Porsche centre JHB for some help and possibly a certificate of origin. there they confirmed that the chassis number was real and came back with the following info.

    "Hi Peter

Attached is what the factory has come back with, looks like it was a test vehicle.

7/15/2012 5:28:40 PM , Aftersales Intern: Dear Stefan, PAG found details for 310001S (see attachment), vehicle was delivered to the testing departmnet in April 1967, unfortunately only the below information is available.

    Engine No. 981712
    Transmission No. 104690
    Key No. CC 164
    Color 6664 D/C
    Exterior Color light beige
    Interior: Partial leather beige

    Stefan Bond
    Parts Manager"

So here we sit with this info and what we can say that the engine and gearbox numbers do not match the numbers Porsche has given us. it currently has a 4 speed 912 gearbox and a 1968T engine.

So can any body help us find the engine and gearbox that the car left the factory with?
Also does anyone have access to more info possibly about the car, or at least help me with where to start

We plan to restore her to her former glory, and so we certainly won"t build a race car any more.

    Thanks you for your interest

    Hello and a great find,

Seems to me like it's a regular thing loosing the original engine and gearbox in South Africa, my car is no.8 off the production line in 69 and both the engine and gearbox is missing....from Gautang area..

Good luck with finding it, have you looked at the lost and found thread on this forum,
    Cheers lee

Such an apparently special car should be restored as original in my estimation. Any pictures (especially of the VIN markings)?

    Hi Lee
    thanks for the msg
i have checked the lost and found, and can;t see anything at first glance.
What are the numbers you are looking for?
are you in JHB? have you contacted all the local porsche guys here like Ludi K, Abbot and carrera motors?
Another issue we have is that the car didn;t come with papers, so we need to be able to look the chassis number up on the Cops system, any idea how to go about that?

    thanks greg

    Hi Greg,

I'm in the uk but car came from Pretoria in 2000, I've spoken to both Ludi and Carrera,
Carrera were a complete waste of time and refused to help, Ludi has promised for the
Past year but so far nothing.

If you have a registration document you can request the last three owners, I was told
My car could have many previous registration numbers because they have changed over
The years, I have the most recent but need the older prefix to track down the early owners
And history, you can get archived docs from Victoria archive but files are a mess according to
Ludi, this is why I'm still waiting.

I really wish I lived in SA as I would probably have the details by now, engine is 6193047,
Gearbox 7290145, SA registration was FJD477GP, vin 119100008.

If you apply for archived details the old engine and box may be listed on the docs from Victoria,
Do me a favor and get me mine while your at it, ha ha

    Cheers lee
