Inspired by Tom's post in the Louvers Thread, I thought it might be interesting to run a poll to see what our favorite upgrades and accessories are. I'm probably leaving off some things, but here we go.

and a 380 mm RSR thickness steering wheel. Also an upgraded suspension; larger sways, torsion bars and Bilsteins lowered and corner balanced.

I'll second Brian, no replacement for displacement.

I wish the poll let us list more than 10 choices. We could probably put together a Top 50. I *really* like over-size brakes for example. But I left mechanical stuff off of this list, which we could maybe call the Geegaw List (I like geegaws). Maybe we should do another poll for performance enhancements?

youre correct to a point. with the 912, im kind of limited at that point right now.. i already have it up to 1700cc. new developments have allowed for 1900cc and twing plugs. i have a spare, complete motor from a 67 that will become a 1900cc twin plug sleeper when money allows. a 1900 cc will require the case to be modified to accept the larger cylinders. the heads will have to be modified for the twin plug.. of course this all spells complete rebuild and massive machine work. very very few have gone to these extremes on their 912s.

needless to say, to quote dave hillman and john thornton, you can never win the hp game. there will always be someone out there with more displacement, and more hp.

suspension set up, lightness, balance, and most importantly driving abilty will be the great equalizer.

Great topic! After the car come the 'goodies'

I went through this with a 356, and I want to do the same things with the 911. I like the genuine, period stuff, as if it's 'back in the day,' and I'm filling out the order form myself . . .

Here goes.

1) A big tank --- nothing like having 500+ miles of range between fill-ups on a long-distance drive. And I'd stick with the fender-fill; having a hole in the hood is just asking for it

2) A special steering wheel --- not so much for the 'bling' as for the feeling; that wheel is my 'user interface,' same as . . .

3) A Special seat --- I'm spoiled by a fixed-back ProFi in my daily-driver, and, personally, I think the factory 'sports seats' are just butt-UGLY; but, I'd like to get one of the factory's period racing seats . . . as long as I fit

4) Hhhhh. 7Rs in back. With spacers. Pure function and almost totally invisible . . . unless you're looking.

5) Factory light-weight panels --- like the balsa-cored hood and alloy door-skins; truly totally invisible, until you punch the gas. (Or something hits them!)

I could buy a car for what this stuff costs.

And as long as we're talking about what we'd put on our little charges. . . here's my list of things that I will NEVER EVER defile my car with:

1) Through-the-grill- and hood-mounted accessory lights --- pustular, carbuncular, odious. The fog-lights are just precious, but does anybody really light-off their Cibie's and use them (or their car) the way they were intended? My car will see the other side of a buck-forty, but why would I want to pimple-up it's face with this mess? What's next? Dagmars and a swamp-cooler? Woof!

2) Ski- and luggage-racks -- yeah, right, that'll really improve the appearance AND the performance of any 'sports car.' I remember how all the VW Guys seem have an absolutely unquenchable fetish for this stuff; did those guys move up-market or something? When I go driving, if it doesn't fit inside the car --- it doesn't go. 'May I suggest something in a U-Haul, Sir?' Ick!

3) Wacky faux-racer paint-jobs --- copying some color-challenged-but-period-correct race livery is probably pushing it, and more than a little. But start laying on the baby-blue and day-glo orange, taping-off a nice horny set of skunk-stripes --- then completing the 'effect' by sticking a 'horsey' on --- well, we're clean off the reservation now, Picasso. I swear, some of the cars I see need ice-cream truck music. If I really, REALLY, have an uncontrollable urge to get artistic with my car, maybe I'll start by defiling some scale models with my designated plumage, or maybe commissioning some vinyl graphics, then seeing how I feel . . . before asking anyone to lose their lunch over my latest 'creation'

And this stuff is bank, too! The best thing I can say about all this malarky is that it soaks up money that people would otherwise spend on the stuff I want.
