Thread: Door Seals

  1. #81
Thanks for the additional info. I have to say my previous both '72 E and '81 SC were very quiet. My current seals on my '65 car are very odd, first they don't look very deep, they are hollow inside and have some sort of holes in them too. They are one piece however so can't be just random door seal.Name: IMG_20191209_154423.jpg

Those are later 70s-80s seals. I'm not a 901 expert but have inspected several "barn find" '65s as well as Weldon Scrogham's pristine original '65...they all had, with the exception of Weldon's, petrified solid lipped seals as discussed in earlier posts in this thread.

Interesting, I have not seen seals with this "stripy" texture and that are so "shallow" in vertical depth. On my '72 and '81 cars they were certainly smooth and looked much bigger/bulkier. The dilemma is - whether to fiddle with these ones with Sugru, buy original spec solid ones then fiddle or buy new set from Porsche and see what they are like.

I've restored 65-66 911s from "original" stock and the seals you show with ribs are identical to the three cars I've done. I assume the holes allow air to escape when the door is closed and seal compressed. If these seals are not correct for 65-66 I'd like to know which ones are

I think at the beginning of the thread the solid type are correct (that look like a whale in the cross section). I'm more interested in performance however.

I have now managed to obtain 5 versions of seals from different vendors.

Did anyone manage to reproduce or even see what the Desk Pad from the catalogue was and where it went?

So they started with the hollow type! then went onto the "devil with wonky horn" then "diving man" and finally "dead whale" before coming back to hollow type for the LWB cars ...

Wow! The WORD! a factory bulletin. Just when you think you know...you don't! None of the early cars I had seen had those hollow seals.....either later production or replaced back in the day. cool!
