Thread: is this car worth something?

    is this car worth something?

    or at least restoring? My neighbor found it and thought it was an expensive S model. No need to say he is not an expert so he asked me for advice. I don't know much about early cars but I love the look of the long hood, so I went to check the car and took pictures. It appears to have 4 coats of different paint colors, I think it was a light blue originally. has rust that was poorly repaired on the floor and rear seats. rear fiberglass flares, bumpers and wing. I know it's a 66 and it's not an S model, but what I would like to know is how much it's worth. I will try to go back and get the engine number if that will help. Here's some pictures I took, I appreciate your input.

    Hi there, from my point of view, each single unit of this wonderful 911s should be worth a restoration/hotrod work. Time is the enemy of the passion, not the money.
    Any serial numbers ? more pics ? a bit of records ?

    Looks to me like a 1965 SWB given the chassis number of 3023[2]7. some modifications have been made

    I love hearing what people over there have to say about these early SWB 911s. Most don't seem to realize how valuable they have become. In my opinion it is easy worth the asking price and is definitely worth saving. It has a lot of problems, but it also has a lot going for it. Everything that has been messed up on that car can be fixed given you have enough money and or time.

    It would make a decent, not great, parts car. Doesn't look like much of the body is salvagable, though. One could probably remove the front fenders without using any tools. My guess is that it has a 69 911E engine and the seats probably came from the same car as the motor. The seats are from a 69 or 70 911. WE still need to cut up a few cars in order to save the rest of the fleet. There is no way to save all the remaining cars, this one is a perfect example. Is it worth the asking price?

    Not terribly original, but if the body is not rusted too bad, then it does have good possibilities.

    At one time I put the notion out there that any car under serial number 1000 (301 000) was a must save at all costs - that was when a restoration was under $40-50K.

    Four years ago I moved that to all the 1965 cars up to serial number 2000 (302 000) and a month later realized a restored car 3029xx left the country for $75K and resold in Europe within 3 months for $105K. Any of the Solex cars are still FIA race eligible. And have now moved into a new category ....

    We are far more connected than it was 20 years ago when the 356 was at the stage where the early 911 is today. So trends are moving with more notice. Some cars are sitting under years of neglect and period "updates", but the special character of the cars shine thru.

    It is up to the owners and fans of the cars to evaluate if each car is worth a total restoration. Follow two of the multi-year projects here on the E S Reg. A 1964 yellow car of Mark Wenthaus in Germany (the Beirut found car) and the stellar 1966 green car of John Cramer in New York. Not an easy path but seeing the cars looking like new is well worth it. (Use the word "worth" in any way you choose).
