    Please...Help Me Speculate.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and am looking for some input on a project car I am considering. I am not a purist at all(except for only ever owning german built cars). I autocross and enjoy modifying and restoring cars.

Matching numbers really aren't my thing. Go-Fast is.

There is a 68 SWB for sale near me which caught my eye. It is very non original, but mostly complete. I have yet to see the car in person and being that I am out of town for a while I wont be right away.

The ad said "68 Porsche turbo body 911 for sale. It has a 2.0L with webers, carrera chain tensioners. motor has been updated. Has Fuchs 7's and 8's. perfect project car at the right price. Asking $5,000"
I spoke with the seller and he says it has Recaros, some type of sport steering wheel, ran when parked but hasn't been started in a while, and has some rust but is not structural. He also owns some more correct/original cars which are more his style

I am thinking this could be a pretty sweet autocross/street driver. I do some TIG welding and am an ASE Master Auto Tech, though that is not my profession currently. I realize rust is probably the biggest issue to look out for. Any special advice on that?
What would be a good combination for an engine swap that doesn't make the rear too heavy? Would a 3.0 and 915(?) trans be too much if it fits? Would selling of the 2.0/Webers to get some funds back be realistic? Any other thoughts?

Kind guiding advice appreciated, but feel free to rip me a new one if you feel it's necessary...I have been researching this for a few days but want some interactive input. Thanks.

Looks like a great start for an ST build. I'd prefer a LWB though. Are the flares metal or glass? You would have to modify the tunnel if you wanted to go to a 915.

I have to find out about the flares. A LWB would probably be more suited to my intentions, but the local availability of the car is significant. I live on an island in the pacific...

Thanks for the words about putting in a 915. That's just the type of info I'm trying to find, which mostly take experience and lots of research to acquire. I just read your entire ST build thread, and it is sweet!

Look at how they attached the flares at the rear. Turbo flares on a SWB car can be pretty goofy. I had a friend with this arrangement and the wheels were not centered in the wheel opening!
