    A challenge? 1970S resto

I don't want to get too excited but I thought its about time to share some of my fun.

Don't expect the incredible detail of Fishcop's most impressive rebuild, but come along for the ride. This is more of a save I think, as I think some others may have either cut it up, or given it to a pro and been $100K lighter in the pocket.

To be clear this is a learning process for me, both to understand the cars better, and make myself more self sufficient. Also I wanted a project to learn welding, and better understand the mechanics of suspension and engine gearbox. I expect to make a few mistakes, and need some professional help along the way.

Thanks John Forcier and Robbo for your help and support and encouragement so far.

    Here we go.

So its a 1970 911S delivered in West Germany as a LHD. Some time it got to Australia. It was converted via a cut and shut some time in the late seventies/early eighties. A nasty hotrod short hood, wide body kit went on at some stage and the long lost 2.2 MFI was replaced with a 2.7 7R 77 911S engine on webers.

Some extensive rust repair/patching has been done through its life. It is fair to say that the repairs have caused much of the extensive rust now in the body. The repairs were amateur at best and in most cases did not address the issues and certainly did not stop the rot. As a result the rust continued, the leaking windows were not fixed and previous repairs will have to be redone. This car is a great example of why rust repairs should be done properly and not just patched to get through it.

    The photos!!!

So I have removed all the fibreglass bits and cut the rear guards off. EVERY rust spot has been previously repaired!

I have removed the front harness as seen above. We will be making a complete new harness for the car. I have all the new rust repair panels for the sills, and have some more parts coming to fix the torsion tube area. The upside is that there is a new front pan and basically the car is fine. There are much worse cars that have and are being restored, and in the words of Fishcop.....its not hard, just take your time. If it gets a bit hard, walk away, or do something else and come back to it. I have already taken that advice many times.

This weekend is engine and gearbox out and then I can get a little more serious.

BTW, its going back to LHD.

I think the original Silver should go back on.

To be really clear, this is being built as a driver, not concourse, and its important to keep that in mind. Its about building a safe reliable car that is rust free and will last for many many more years.

    Thanks for looking.

    Poor baby...

Did I mention that a lot of the project management effort in this will be managing your wife? My wife jokingly referred to my car as my mistress in years gone by; now she's not joking when she mentions it...
