Thread: Steering Wheel Hub ('64-73.5) Different Spline Count?

Steering Wheel Hub ('64-73.5) Different Spline Count?

Clearing out the garage I collected 3 VDM four spoke steering wheels with two different size spline counts.

#1- is 24 tooth spline w/22mm ID; 400mm wheel (has a steel ring around it)
    #2- is 40 tooth spline w/20mm ID; 400mm wheel

    I have a '66 911, '69 911 and a '72+/- 914 and they all take the #2 hub (40x20mm ID)

How many different types of spline/hub configurations are there that used the early VDM 4 spoke wheel??

    I thank you in advance.

    pic#1= 24x22mm 400mm wheel
    pic#2= 40x20mm '69 911 400mm wheel
    pic#3= 40x20mm '72+/- 914 380mm wheel

Over the past 10 years I have owned over 100 911, 912 & 914 steering wheels & all of them had the same diameter & number of splines (as in your 2nd & 3rd pictures) - I've never seen another Porsche steering wheel with a spline arrangement like your 1st picture.

The 356B/C models had the same splines as the '65-'74 911 models - are you sure that the first wheel came from a Porsche ?

Looks like a Porsche wheel with an unusual adapter on it, built up.

I'm not exactly sure it came from a Porsche...I bought the wheel some years ago as it is. Looking at it I wonder is someone re-cut the splines and added the steel ring to fit another car/steering shaft??

Isn't that an A car hub? I don't have one handy, but it looks close; slightly bigger, about half the spline count.

Someone was getting ready to put this on something other than a longhood 911. Let's see the other side of this puppy and the part number. Thanks.

The face of the hub looks like a standard 911, no indentation like the 914. The face looks chewed up a bit and I can't make out any part numbers or date code.

Thanks so far for every ones input!!
