A good read on a related era/subject is Michael Cannell's "The Limit: Life and Death on the 1961 Grand Prix Circuit". It focuses on Phil Hill's story but touches on many of the racing drivers of the era, a good number of whom were lost as time, and the racing, went on. I thought it was an interesting book, and a good addition to any motorsport library.

"Mountain Legend" is a great film - I watched it earlier this year a few times over, it's really well put together.

I've been going to the Long Beach ALMS race for a few years now and I can say that Laguna Seca is at least 10x better for viewing the cars. The only thing good about Long Beach is that you can get closer to the cars in the paddock because it is so darn cramped. But as far as getting any good photos without the expensive super photo ticket, forgetaboutit. You just have to accept having a fence over the cars in your shots.

Laguna Seca, by contrast is in a beautiful area and you can bike/walk all over getting many different fence-free angles.

So I prefer road courses to city courses. The Targa, however, was not a city race. I really like the tarmac rally and hillclimb events, being that they race on roads more like those around my house. There actually used to be a race track in the middle of all these canyon roads around here- Paramount Ranch, but it closed due to safety and noise concerns. Which means that people just started racing around the canyons with the slight inconvenience of the police.
