Roll Call: LWB Soft-window ‘S’ Targa

Targas are not exactly my thing --- soft-windows, even less-so. And apparently I’m not the only one --- given the comparative rarity of these cars . . . especially in an ‘S’ car . . . and more spectacularly --- in a long wheel-base one

The figure I recall was that 5 (!!!!!) were imported into the US, in ’69. And I would expect that a similar small number were not . . . + even less --- if any . . . after that. In any market --- any long wheel-base soft-window Targa --- especially in ‘S’ form . . . is a very rare car

Anyway, in the last few months, there have been some pretty amazing cars turning-up --- at shows + for sale. I can remember Gary Emory saying --- >20 years, ago . . . that he thought that the ’67 (short wheel-base) soft-window ‘STarga would be the Next Big Thing. Back then? . . . I thought he was nuts --- but that’s turned-out to be pretty true . . .

. . . But today? . . . I think that the long wheel-base cars will be An Even Bigger Thing. Really --- I had no idea how incredibly rare these cars are

So. Here’s a thread to try to pull together some of the postings + sightings + pictures + relevant details + vicious rumors/vile gossip about one of the rarest of the Long-hoods . . . the long wheel-base + soft-window ‘STarga . . .

    Orange '69 . . .

. . . This amazing time capsule of German engineering is literally one of a kind. According to respected sources, only 6 long wheel base 911S soft window targas were ever built. And only one of them was finished in Tangerine. The original owner specifically wanted a soft window 911S targa and it took until 1970 when a Monterey dealership found this car sitting unsold in a Canadian showroom. So, although first delivered in Canada, this car has only seen miles in the Monterey Bay area. In addition to being a one of a kind rarity, this 911 has been preserved in its original livery.

The original owner, being a pilot, drove this car very sparingly between his home and the aircraft hanger, where it was parked most of the time. According to the original owner, the mileage was correct when he sold it to me (the second owner). The paint was re-done to a very high standard in the original (and desireable) color of Tangerine. I would rate the paint a strong 9.5/10 showing factory depth and clarity. Apart from the paint this car is factory original. The folding targa top is original and in amazing condition along with the roof section and tonneau cover. The factory tool-kit is seemingly unused and original. The interior is completely original and nearly flawless including both front seats, both rear seats, door panels, rubber seals, the original velour carpet, 400mm steering wheel, glove box interior, and the original dash. Even the factory horse-hair sound insulation is still intact and in very nice condition. The rear seats appear as though they have never been sat in. All five date matched (10.68 ) deep 6 Fuchs are in beautiful condition and wearing period correct Vredestein 185R15 tires. The car has never seen rain, snow, or even an outdoor parking space. There is absolutely no rust and there never has been. The floors are completely original along with both longitudinals, both battery boxes, shock towers, and door bottoms. Most importantly this 911 has never seen an accident or even a door ding. All panels close like new, and all locks are smooth as silk with the original ‘Huf’ keys. This car re-defines the quality expected from a factory original car. These beautiful machines are truly only original once and no level of restoration can achieve what we have here.

Mechanically this 911 is extremely solid and absolutely exhilarating to drive. The engine is very strong throughout the power curve with no flat spots. The transmission is very smooth through all 5 gears. The original ‘S’ gages function properly along with the entirety of the electrical system. The original Marchal headlamps add a nice touch to the North American headlight system. Taillights, brake lights, and turn indicators are all fully functioning. The MFI has recently been rebuilt and is performing beautifully. The exhaust is new (and correct) along with both heat exchangers. The Bilstein suspension is new, both batteries are new and the engine has recently been tuned. In addition, any detail that needed to be taken care of was attended to. Overall, driving this car is an amazing experience and truly unique.

Please ask any questions you may have. International inquiries are welcome. Here is a link to the photos . . .

    Went by, checked-out the car . . .

    VIN = 119310132
    Eng# = n/a
    Trans# = ?

    6802-G = polo red - Glasurit

Missing factory ID tag @front latch panel; has some kinda obviously-vintage/replacement CA ID tag, in its place . . . VIN noted as 119310132CA, same as registration

Seller states that he's owned the vehicle since ~'71, always in CA --- 'DMV made me change the plates' . . ., + believed to be French-import. Engine failed/replaced/'disappeared w/ the shop' in '76; mid-'70s CIS motor in, now --- 45k miles since re-build. Has a complete '69 MFI 'S' motor that goes with. Garaged . . . now

Seller states he was at The Phoenix Show doing re-con, last week-end, so has some idea of relative rarity/prices/blah-blah-blah = price he came up with

Don't know how to verify whether any car was originally a SW or not. Seller seems innocent, enough. 'Don't hafta sell . . .'

Super-bright day so hard to take pictures. Overall impression? . . . not that bad. Needs absolutely everything, but, apart from something growing inside/bulging the driver's door skin out and some dried-out rusti-/crustiness in the battery boxes + front support, also some rocker nonsense that needs looking-at . . . IMO? --- totally saveable

Stupid-rare car + cond #4- . . . just too bad about that MiA motor
