    POLL/CENSUS: Cars + Panel Numbers

Came across this a few months back . . . now just getting around to posting a poll . . .

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ocations/page2

Turns out that long wheel-base Karmann-built bodies have two-digit ID numbers stamped on some parts of them --- at least on the tops of inner door panel stampings, and on the stiffener underneath/inside the rear deck lid --- whether the lid be steel or alu

These two-digit numbers seem to match-up w/ the 'tunnel' number . . . the one stamped into the edge of the access port for the shift coupler, at the rear of the passenger compartment

Karmann-built cars have a '2' in the 6th-position of their VIN . . . but this poll is not specific to any type or model . . . just long wheel-base cars built from '69 on. According to the Red Book, Karmann only built coupe bodies --- 'T's + 'E's in '70, then 'T's only after. But --- that doesn't mean a non-Karmann-built car doesn't have this stuff

(I got started on this whole subject because I installed an alu lid w/ a 2-digit number stamped on it --- on an 'S' car, so . . .)

    Not sure when this practice started --- or stopped . . . but this stuff's turned-up on early '70s cars, so . . .

    Anyway, here's a poll . . .

Size: 117.5 KB So my car is not Karmann built and the headlight buckets have the three digit number stamped on them, as does one door. The other door has a two digit number stamped... 90 ... does this indicate that it was taken from a Karmann car at a later date? I have an invoice that shows work was done on the door in the early 1970s... perhaps the door was changed out?

The location of the number looks different. Mine is in the same place as Rick's at the very top of the door.

    Numbers on Body Panels

Porsche seems to have continued the practice of stamping identification numbers on some of the major panels of its cars --- as seen on the 356 . . . up through the SWB 911 cars . . . then stopped --- not sure when

As for Karmann . . . they seem to have continued stamping numbers up thru production of their 'C' + 'D' program (Aug '69 to Jul '71) cars --- LWB . . . possibly, even later . . .

    . . . hence the poll

    Short Version:

On a short-wheel-base car, I would not be surprised to see numbers --- 2-digit? . . . stamped on doors, headlight buckets, hoods + engine covers

But, on a long-wheel-base car, I would be surprised to see any numbers stamped, on any major panels . . .

    . . . unless it was a Karmann-built car --- as identified by VIN

    3-digit ID Numbers

    Here's an interesting thread --- a '70 T being by Enrico (Herbie) restored in Italy . . .
    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ation-in-Italy

    . . . w/ 3-digit (!) ID numbers stamped on a body-panel

Not sure if this is a Karmann-built car or not. Either way, more details forthcoming, hopefully . . .
