I think what Harvey is saying is worry less about the color of the lid and drink more beer!! Ok.

Ok,
Here’s a scanned pic I took of the ‘suspension on, engine in’ complete I had done a year after I got my car, so this was July ’90. (It was still on Goodyear Gatorbacks, and Tony at TLG had already retro-fitted a ’72 cooler w/late hard lines.)
This was how the smugglers box came on the car before I messed with it at all. It looks satin black with just a hint of body color overspray…..
Again, April build '73

Also not the black applied after the Sepia and what apears to be brushed on around the VIN.

Another data point that I have been meaning to post when I got pics. This is from a very original 73.5T with 28,000 miles. Trunk was painted with the lid open. Interesting that they did that. Must have been SOP in 1973.

Regarding the beer .... it was sold in vending machines at the factory, just like soda. In Europe drinking too much is/was a socially irresponsible thing to do, which had nothing to do with enjoying one at lunch or t work.

Sorry for the confusion about not cleaning out the Gas heater box from the smuggling run before the picture.
P.S. I don't think that you would make it out of Chico calling Torpedo Extra 7.2 IPA a beer
