Thread: 911S/911L Cars for Sale

  1. #2221
That Targa appeared here earlier as a project car that was being repaired by somebody (I think) from the Carlifornia. Whoever bought it had the guy repair the left rear longitudinal and do other metal work. Then the new owner wanted it sent to Germany for the professional finishing. Crappy interior resto. Missing almost all the aluminum trim and the radio plate sucks. Guess professional finishing means "signatures" Apologies for carping.Targa arrives 2.jpg

1967 was the first year Porsche released the highest performing version of the original short wheelbase 911. According to a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and Kardex, this particular 911S left the Porsche factory in May 1967. Delivered through selling dealer Autogerma of Bologna Italy to first owner and resident, Luigi Biuagli, this 911S was produced for the Italian market and optioned with only a Webasto gas to escape punitive taxes that might have been due if the retail price exceeded a certain threshold set by the Italian tax authorities. After one additional Italian owner, the 911S was imported into the United States in 1985 and subsequently passed through two more ownerships before being purchased by current enthusiast custodianship. In January 2014 a comprehensive circa three-year restoration of the 911S was commissioned. Mechanical and suspension work was entrusted to Tony and Marco Gerace of TLG Auto, marque specialists in North Hollywood, California who rebuilt the 911’s 2.0-liter flat-six engine and refreshed the original Type 901 5-speed gearbox. Well-regarded Esposito Porsche Repair, also of North Hollywood, meticulously disassembled the car which was found to be very original with date-coded gas tank and gauges while fenders, trunk and engine lid bear were stamped with the last three digits of the chassis number. Testifying to the quality of the restoration, this car was exhibited at the June 2018 Rodeo Drive Concours in Beverly Hills and won both its class and division at the September 2018 Porsche Club of America Zone 8 Los Angeles Concours held at the Petersen Museum. In October 2018, this car was chosen to participate in a special commercial commissioned by Porsche to commemorate its 70th anniversary which premiered at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2018. Currently located in the LA area.

Even knowing that the BHCC car will almost certainly be worse than it looks, and the missing MFI is a problem, I think I'd go with the green one. The purple is über-rare, but green is uncommon as well, and might be easier to live with long-term. I think I'd get tired of the purple.

    BaT Description:

This 1968 Porsche 911S coupe was delivered new at Sonauto in Paris and imported to Canada in the early 1970s, reportedly through the French embassy. The car was later put into longterm storage before being reconditioned in 1996. It was purchased in 2008 by the seller’s father, who has since added about 5k kilometers. Finished in Polo Red over a black and red interior, the car is powered by its numbers-matching 2.0L flat-six, which was rebuilt under current ownership and is paired with a Type 902 five-speed manual transaxle. This SWB 911S is now offered by the seller on behalf of his father with service records, an owner’s manual, a jack and tool roll, additional literature, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean Wisconsin title.

The 911S was not available in the US for 1968, and this European-market example was reportedly repainted in its factory Polo Red (6802) in 1996. Replacement body seals have also been fitted, and a dent behind the passenger door is shown up close in the photo gallery. 15” Fuchs wheels wear 215/60 Pirelli P6000 tires that were installed in 2017. The S model came equipped from the factory with ventilated disc brakes. Exterior equipment includes chrome lower rocker trim, front fog lights, gold decklid lettering, a collapsible antenna, and a driver’s sideview mirror.

The interior is trimmed in black leatherette with matching door panels and dash surfaces. Red carpet was a factory option as noted on the CoA, and red and black Coco mats have been added. The speaker cover on the driver’s door is missing, and the passenger-side door pocket is loose. Metric VDO gauges include an 8k-rpm tachometer and a 250-km/h speedometer. The five-digit odometer shows 16k kilometers (~10k miles) and has rolled over. A tear is present on the dashboard speaker grille.

The carbureted 1,991cc flat-six was rated for 160 when new and was rebuilt in 2009, including the installation of replacement connecting rods, valve guides, timing chains, and upgraded timing chain tensioners. Other work performed in 2009 included rebuilding the carburetors and installing a replacement muffler. An oil change was last performed in July 2019. Stamping *4080688* can be seen above and matches the number listed on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, confirming engine originality. Stamping 238375 can be seen on the Type 902/1 transaxle in the gallery, indicating it is a replacement unit.

The front trunk is lined with gray carpet and contains the battery and a tool kit. The front hood shocks are worn and due for replacement. The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity shows a birth date/delivery date of January 22, 1968, as well as the factory colors and equipment. The sale also includes a tool roll, jack, an owner’s manual, period literature, and service records.

    Dealer Description:

    - build date: 15 June 1973
    - one of the last 2.4 911S ever made
    -striking original Metallic Green colour
    - fully restored from bare metal in Germany in 2017
    - numbers matching engine

This Porsche 1973 911S 2.4 was sold in June 1973 through Porsche Italy. It spent most of its life in Germany with a single owner from the 1980s through to 2009. It was then purchased by a German collector who ran the car for several years before commissioning a complete restoration in 2015.

The bodywork was completed by Giuseppe Bongiorno and the engine and gearbox were rebuilt by SHK Racetec, both located close to Frankfurt. There is a detailed photographic record of the work that was completed, showing the car to have been extremely original and solid before the work was started. This is consistent with the cost of the restoration, which is supported by bills on file for over €80,000. The work was completed in 2017 and the car had only shakedown mileage put on it before it was sold to its current owner in 2018 and imported into the UK.

Since then the car has been maintained by well-respected early Porsche specialists, Historika, and has been driven less than 1,000 kilometres. It is well set-up and drives just as it should.

Not the usual 73 "corduroy" seat fabric ?

Could just be my tired eyes after a long day but are the 2 and the 2 fonts on vin stamping different to one another on the angled downward parts of font?

Not only what looks like an an inconsistent shape between the final pair. On the final digit 2.... that 45 degree downward slope of top half giving way around mid point to what looks to be then a very vertical very straight line on lowest half of downward line then making a sharply defined 90 degree angle with the base ...forming what looks on photo like a very straight line squared corner angle at join to base ...that feature of the stamp font is what caught my eye.

Could be an artefact of photo? Not saying this VIN is incorrect on basis of this one photo, hoping fresher eyes can give a viewpoints ?

Edit: There are many examples of vins on this site including this one below posted previously by Hugh as a exemplar of a vin on RS thread. I trust his knowledge and judgement. I don't know this reference car or photo either so can't vouch for it personally. Interesting to note the downward angle of the 2 in Hugh's example below doesn't seem to have much straight line at any point, unlike the last digit 2 in the green S? The first of the green cars pair of 2s if compared to the one pictured below does however appear somewhat more similar in that downward ngled area. As previously stated it could be all pukka and any seeming difference being down to an artefact of the green car's photo lighting etc. Certainly not saying anything is wrong based on just one photo rather than an in person but the photo in the sales listing juxtaposing what seems to be different font in one stamping is certainly intriguing.
