We are pleased to present this 1968 Porsche 911L (Luxe). Purchased by the seller approximately 30 years ago, this 911 was professionally refinished in eye-catching Signal Red and received a heavily upgraded 2.2L flat-six engine. Being the last year of the first generation short wheelbase 911, this rare 1968 example is one of only 499 examples built for the US and is now being offered for auction in turn-key condition.
This 911 was stripped down to bare metal prior to undergoing a full glass-out professional respray in the eye-catching color of Signal Red in 2015. During the initial restoration in the 1980s, sheet metal was replaced in the front floor pan, inner and outer rockers, rear torsion tube, doors and fenders. The paint shows to be lustrous and all panel gaps are noted to be uniform; detailed images can be found within the photo gallery and outline just a few minor imperfections. A previous owner replaced the center nose section of the car between the headlights and back to the fuel tank with components sourced from a 1966 model. Noteworthy features include a fiberglass 911 S-style front bumper that was refinished in Signal Red with wide deco trim and factory 15x 5 1/2 Fuchs wheels which have been professionally refinished are currently dressed in 2-year old Dunlop Signature tube tires.
The black interior of this 911 has been completely refurbished in black vinyl with a black leather-covered dashboard. At the time of this work, new headrests and seat covers were installed, door panels from a 1967 911 S were fitted with flush mounted speakers and grill cloth, and the gauges were sent to North Hollywood Speedometer to be restored. Modifications include a retrofitted A/C system, an added factory electric sunroof, and a Momo competition steering wheel. This 911 also features a period-correct Blaupunkt radio with an upgraded USB port. All gauges, electrical components and accessories are reported to be fully functional.
Although the odometer is fully operational showing 58,895 miles, there is a mileage discrepancy noted on the vehicle’s title. The seller claims to have added approximately 11k miles in 30 years of ownership.
This 911 carries a type 901/14 flat-six engine that boasts an increased displacement of 2.2L. The rear wheels are driven by way of an original rebuilt 5-speed manual transmission, making for a visceral and connected driving experience. In 2000, the engine was rebuilt with new bearings, gaskets, rod bolts, and oil-fed chain tensioners. The heads are from a 2.4L 911 T and the cylinders and pistons are from a 911E. Other notable upgrades include MSD 6A ignition, a rebuilt JWE distributor, Weber carburetors and water shield air cleaners.
Koni shocks are paired to front torsion bars which the seller has adjusted for a lowered ride height. A full-sized muffler has been installed and modified with a right-side exhaust tip to mirror the stock left side muffler.
A compression test was conducted in 2017 which yielded readings between 130-137 psi throughout all 6 cylinders. Around this time, the front main seal, intermediate shaft cover gasket and camshaft bearing seals were replaced. 930 lower valve covers and the stock upper valve covers were machined flat and all corresponding gaskets were replaced. The seller confirms that a new battery has been installed, sunroof seals have been replaced and that both carburetors have been cleaned and adjusted. Detailed invoices and service records are available in the photo gallery. This 911 is said to remain in excellent running order.
The sale of this 1968 911 will include two sets of keys, comprehensive service records and invoices, the original front bumper, a clear title and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. It is believed that only 227 911 S models were built with a Sportomatic for 1968, many of which were replaced because of their unconventional operation. This 911 S was sold new in Europe before making its way to Canada sometime in the 1980s. The current owner purchased the car in 1990 and commissioned a comprehensive restoration that was completed in January. The restoration included a complete stripping of the body, which was expertly refinished in the factory Burgundy color. The contrasting beige interior has been carefully restored as well and features the desirable Pepita fabric front seat inserts seats as well as a modern retro-designed radio. The engine is believed to be a factory replacement, stamped with the original number, and has been completely rebuilt by London Porsche in London, Ontario. It has been upgraded with stainless-steel performance headers. The gearbox also matches the original factory Kardex, a copy of which is included on file. Furthermore, a dossier of restoration receipts along with a spare tire, jack, and tool roll accompany the car.
A desirable European-delivery 911 S, this freshly restored example retaining its original Sportomatic transmission is ready to be enjoyed and cherished by its next caretaker.

Some fun facts, this car is the reason Pima county AZ, Tucson and Maricopa county, Phoenix AZ. has "classic car" exemption status. Paul Gilmore got so frustrated having to pass emissions every year with this 67S that he wrote a law and lobbied to make an emission exemption for older vehicles.
It did not go through, frustrated Paul sold the car to his son, Robin, my friend since Jr. high school who lived in California. California had much easier emission standards than AZ at that time as 75 and older vehicles do not have to pass emissions.
Robin was one of three sons and when one of them did something wrong they had to wash this car for punishment, and something really bad they had to wax it. Robin drove this car twice before he bought it, his prom was one of those times.
Robin did not like this car because of childhood baggage, In 2001 Robin tried to sale this car in San Diego for $15,000 and no one would buy it for that much, I do not remember if he even put the title in his name as he never drove it and really did not want it. I bought it and it returned it to Tucson and a few years later Paul's law went through and I got to use the exemption he originally wrote for this car with it.
Paul Gilmore died last year, Robin died, young with a heart attack 4 years before that.
It really is a great car, and even had more factory options than it is being sold now with, factory installed hood lights , coaxial cable up through the right windshield pillar for a two way radio, to name a few.
