    According to Car and Driver's 1967 Porsche 911 S Archived Test and Brett Johnson's The 911 & 912 Porsche -- A Restorer’s Guide to Authenticity (page 58) a leather-covered wheel was standard on the '67 911S.

PET associates 901.347.082.71 steering wheel leather with Model 911 S.

I've seen some 1967 911S cars with wooden steering wheels. Maybe the original owners specified that as an option.

    Auction Description:

    - One of 614 such examples for 1969
    - Very attractive Targa in special-order Metallic Blue
    - Optioned with factory air conditioning
    - 45-year tenure by original owner; highly original
    - Extremely well documented from new

It can become quite hot during the summer in Texas, hence the decision by R.W. Robinson of Austin to specify air conditioning when he placed his order for a new 1969 Porsche 911 S Targa though Intercontinental Motors in San Antonio. He also requested the rarely seen special-order color, Metallic Blue (6853) – a $152 extra – with a black leatherette interior. According to this car’s original window sticker and invoice (included with the car’s file), Mr. Robinson also ticked the boxes for a Becker Europa radio and antenna/speaker package, tinted glass all around with a single-stage heated rear window, and a set of Michelin tires. Another interesting item was the inclusion of “self-leveling front suspension,” a feature ordered on many 911 Es, but rarely found on other models.

Completed on 2 April 1969, the car was shipped to the United States, and was delivered to Randy Robinson exactly two months later on 2 June. It would remain with him for the next 45 years. According to the dealer invoice, the Becker radio was changed on arrival to a Blaupunkt AM/FM prior to delivery, which remains with the car today. The car was also fitted with a set of bumper guards and color-coordinated Coco mats. In the early 1970s, the Robinson had Forest Lane Porsche-Audi in Dallas, Texas, replace the original Boge hydropneumatic front suspension with Koni struts (as the original system was notoriously unreliable). The rear shock absorbers were also replaced with Konis. At a later date, stainless rocker trim and a pair of Hella below-the-bumper driving lights were installed, along with painted center caps for the Fuchs alloy wheels.

The consignor, just the third registered owner, notes that the car was repainted in the mid-1980s by the original owner, and has been carefully maintained from new, including a complete rebuild of its original engine by the previous owner in 2013.

It is unusual to find such an elegant all-matching-numbers Targa that is so fully documented; it is supplied with its correct owner’s manual and maintenance booklet in their original maroon vinyl slipcover, and a comprehensive file containing the CoA, original window sticker, and a meticulously detailed maintenance history from new. Also included are the correct spare wheel, jack, tool kit, and even a period-correct Mohn ski-rack and set of skis mounted to the rear . . . should the new owner ever find snow in Texas.

    Registration OUW 6F
    Chassis Number 11800138
    Engine Number 4080156
    Odometer reading 2 miles
    Estimate £220,000 - £250,000
The original Porsche 911, with its famous and durable design, was introduced in the autumn of 1963 replacing the 356 and manufactured until 1989. The latter's rear-engined layout was retained, but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the body shell and dropped the 356's in favour of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. In its original format, Porsche's single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat six 1,991cc engine produced 130bhp; progressively enlarged and developed; it would eventually grow to more than three litres and, in turbo-charged form, put out well over 300bhp. The first of countless upgrades came in 1966 with the announcement of the 911S. Distinguished by its stylish Fuchs five-spoke alloy wheels, the 'S' featured a heavily revised engine producing 160bhp - an increase of 30% over the standard 911, increasing the top speed to 140mph. Other improvements included Koni shock absorbers, a front anti-roll bar and more powerful ventilated disc brakes. In 1967, Porsche introduced the 911T model and subsequently a 911E version; however the 911S was the most desirable and with only 3,174 Porsche 911S's manufactured, good quality surviving examples are rare and highly collectable.

This magnificent 911S was manufactured on 17th August 1967 and was shipped to AFN, being one of two 1968 model year cars delivered to them in September 1967. Both cars were registered on the same day, the 4th September, one as AFN's demonstrator car together with the car we have for sale, chassis number 11800138, which was registered to Mr. G. Berry of Market Harborough. Undoubtedly, Mr. Berry was the first private individual in the UK to own a 911S; he loved the car so much he continued to own the car until June 2000. The second owner was a Mr. R. Willis who was the custodian of OUW 6F until June 2011 when the current vendor purchased her. The vendor is a very knowledgeable Porsche enthusiast and has been restoring this matching numbers example for the last six years. The bodywork has been stripped and any replacement panels were genuine Porsche items, the ivory white paintwork was carried out by a respected Porsche specialist. The interior was removed, revealing the dash-top signature and VIN from the factory in 1967. Where necessary interior panels were replaced although the vendor together with Garry Hall at Classic FX trimming have painstakingly tried to retain as much of the original trim where possible, the rare elephant hide seats are in splendid condition. The matching numbers engine and gearbox have been totally refurbished and rebuilt and, at the time of writing, have covered no mileage. This Porsche 911S is as close to the specification and condition when she left the factory 50 years ago as you could expect, even the original Fuchs alloy wheels have the date stamped on them. She is supplied with the original buff logbook, a current MoT test certificate and an interesting history folder; over the past 50 years few sports cars have proved as versatile as Porsche's perennial 911, it is difficult to find early example Porsches and even more difficult to find one in this condition.

I seem to remember that Porsche tested cars extensively in those days--something over 20 miles. I could be wrong, but...

This looks like typical Sun newspaper tabloid journalism. I think it's fair to say it's not the most respected of newspapers in the UK, and has taken the small fact of the low odometer reading (which most of us would recognise as 'not representative' on a restored car) and turned it into a false story all of it's own.
