Esses, Fall 2002, “David Mohlman’s ’72 911 S”
THIS CAR
For the 1972 model year, Porsche extensively upgraded its 911 flagship. Commonly referred to as the E series and produced in three versions – T, E, and S, in ascending order of both price and performance – its mechanical changes included an enlarged 2.4-liter engine. The Type 915 five-speed transmission was an all-new design with increased torque capacity and featured a more conventional “H” gate pattern for the first four gears instead of the previous dog-leg arrangement.
A small chin spoiler, the result of aerodynamic work by Porsche engineers and standard on the 911 S, enhanced the car’s appearance and reduced front-end lift at speed. To improve weight distribution and handling, the oil tank was mounted ahead of the rear wheel, prompting an external filler cap to be installed below the passenger-side rear window. The top-of-the-range 911 S utilized Bosch mechanical fuel injection and developed a stout 190 hp at 6,500 rpm. In its February 1972 issue, Car and Driver declared, “The transformation is tremendous. Never before could the 911 be classified as a high-powered car; now it can.”
According to its Certificate of Authenticity, this 1972 911 2.4 S left Porsche’s factory finished in Silver Metallic paint over a black leatherette interior. A US-specification vehicle, optional equipment included a limited-slip differential, stabilizer bars, KONI shocks, tinted glass, and antenna. One of only 1,750 high-performance S coupes built for 1972, this 911 S was purchased new in Texas, where it resided with its first two enthusiast owners and was upgraded to 2.7-liter RS engine specification early in its life using its original, matching-numbers case.
Acquired by noted Porsche collector David Mohlman in September 2000, this car was stripped to bare metal and repainted in its original hue. Additionally, desirable factory sport seats trimmed in black leather and wider 7″ x 15″ Fuchs wheels were sourced and installed. After two additional interim custodians, this 911 S passed into current collector ownership via well-known Porsche racer and specialist Dirk Layer.
In 2015, Rare Drive Inc., the award-winning restoration firm in New Hampshire, was entrusted to perform extensive refurbishment work. During the yearlong process, a concours-standard bare-metal repaint was done in original Silver Metallic and the original transmission was rebuilt, while other mechanical, braking, and suspension components were restored or replaced where needed.
Supplied with books, tools, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and an extensive file of documentation dating to the early 1980s, this well-loved and well-maintained 911 S in attractive colors with RS engine upgrades presents in excellent condition throughout. Combining classic looks with superb performance, this example deserves serious consideration by any Porsche enthusiast or collector.
