Not like a "63" Black Plate?

A few years back California expanded the Year of Manufacture license plate program to include the black plates (1963–69). Previously, only the Black on Yellow plates (1956–62) and earlier were eligible. There was great fanfare, and some resistance from people who though their original black plate cars would be devalued.

However, California now allows yellow on blue plates in the Year of Manufacture license plate program. This change got no publicity; I just happened upon an updated application form. It looks like this is only good for the 6 digit passenger car plates (1970-79) although California issued 7 digit yellow on blue plates until 1986.

Note that the black on yellow and yellow on black plates had three letters followed by three numerals while the yellow on blue plates had three numerals followed by three letters. You can get yellow on black vanity plates from the California DMV if you stand in line for several hours but they won't issue three letters followed by three numerals.

Whatever's going on with the 1973 2.4L 911S Coupe at Canepa, it's not "legal." If it's an original blue plate car the rear plate needs to have a sticker for the year the plate expires, i.e. 2019 or 2020.

If it's a Year of Manufacture plate, the rear plate needs to have:

• A sticker matching the Year of Manufacture of the car, i.e. 1973, and
• Current year of registration and month of registration stickers, typically on little aluminum ears produced in a California prison.

I have a feeling they just put the 886 BDA blue plate on the car for the photos.

Good morning,

I'd like to share with you our last car for sale, a Porsche 911 S 2000 SWB MY67, sold new in California. Here you can find few photos and information, while on our website www.gulfblue.it there are all the photos. The asking price is: 260.000 Euro

The pioneer of all the Porsche 911 S, in the first year of production: This awesome sample in Light Ivory over red full leather interior was produced the 31st January 1967, equipped with side view mirror, Webasto auxiliary heater and, as mentioned, full leather interior. This 911 has been sold the 10th March of the same year to its first owner, Mt. Fred Hug, living in Beverly Hills.

Since then, it seems that the car had just three owners in the USA before the purchase of the current owner, who sent the car to Italy for a professional restoration by Carrozzeria Serattini, here in Bologna.

The car still has its original service book and many invoices of the works done during the last years. When it arrived in Italy, it was mainly complete and preserved but it needed important works on the body (because of the corrosion). After being completely dismounted, we have changed the body panels and repainted with correct colors and materials. The same for the engine, gearbox and mechanical, which has been fully overhauled and restored. Keeping the original models for the interior Tappezzeria Ferraresi refurbished it in full leather: the owner just decided to put Recaro sport seats instead of the normal ones.

Every special part of the 67 S model has been restored with care: as, for example, 4,5 Fuchs wheels mounted on Pirelli Cinturato tyres, the specific dashboard with instruments, outside profiles, lights, brake calipers, carburetors...Event he Webasto heater has been overhauled and completely restored. Engine and gearbox are brand new: the car ran just for few miles after this recent restoration.

The car will be delivered with all its documents (including the Kardex and the Certificate of Authenticity), the photos of the restoration, double keys, toolbag, jack, manuals and pied-de-poule luggages.

The car has American title and could be seen by appointment in Bologna.

One of 720 Porsche 911 2.0 L coupes built in Zuffenhausen for the non-US market in 1968, this car was delivered to Auto Hamer Porsche of Montreal on May 7, and was soon after transported to Charles Elliott Trudeau, a 46-year-old Harvard-trained architect and younger brother of Pierre Trudeau, then the Canadian prime minister. This 911 L wore a rare color combination: Burgundy Red over brown leatherette with corduroy inserts. The rear deck lid featured a Porsche badge, added by Charles Trudeau early in his ownership. Mr. Trudeau also opted for a Sportomatic, the state-of-the-art, clutch-free transmission developed by Porsche in 1967.

With vented chrome wheels and the same front brake calipers as a top-of-the-line 911 S, Mr. Trudeau’s 911 L was ideally suited for Saint-Sauveur, Quebec, the scenic village where the architect lived until 1994. Shortly before his passing in July of that year, Mr. Trudeau transferred the 911 L to his neighbors, Annie Jenoure and Ross MacDonald. They kept the Porsche garaged in Saint-Sauveur until 2015, when it was acquired by the current consignors.

A three-year restoration followed, with Montreal-based experts Richard and Nick Grenon devoting 3,000 hours to the process. Factory-trained technician Arnold Faas rebuilt the flat-six engine. Restoration photographs, the original maintenance record book, and a Certificate of Authenticity are included. Offering classic short-wheelbase design and a distinguished Canadian pedigree, this Porsche 911 L represents a rare opportunity.

Completed on October 9, 1967 and delivered new to an Ernst Schuler of Siegen, Germany, this very desirable 911S was clearly built for a driving enthusiast who didn't mind attracting attention. According to its accompanying Certificate of Originality, it left the factory painted in vivid Blutorang (Tangerine) with a black leather interior. Herr Schuler had the factory install a pair of optional Sport Seats, a pair of matching headrests, a limited-slip differential, tinted glass all around, a heated rear window, a rear-window wiper, a Webasto auxiliary gasoline heater, and Dunlop tires. Standard equipment included a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Koni shocks and the handsome and now iconic five-spoke Fuchs aluminum alloy wheels. Schuler didn't order a radio; why bother, when the high-revving six provided so much aural entertainment?

It is unknown when this example arrived in America, but at some point a subsequent owner decided to respray the body Light Ivory and change the interior to beige. The original metric speedometer and odometer head was replaced with a standard US-spec instrument that currently indicates just over 24,000 miles. The previous original total mileage is unknown. In this form the car was acquired by Road Scholars in Raleigh, North Carolina, which offered it for sale in 2017. It was fully numbers-matching, and Road Scholars described it as potentially a great basis for a full restoration.

It was soon sold to the owners of European Performance in Raleigh, whose owners embarked on a comprehensive reconstruction to factory-original specification. The shell was taken down to bare-metal and placed on a rotisserie to give access to any potential underbody repair. The body was resprayed in its correct original color, and a new leather interior was sourced from Autobahn in California. The suspension was fully rebuilt with new Koni shocks, new tire rod ends, and new bushings. A new master cylinder was installed, along with new brake lines. The engine, both Weber carburetors, and transmission were properly rebuilt, and a new clutch assembly and exhaust system installed. A new tinted windshield was required, but all the other glass is original. The exterior gold emblems and lettering were replaced with new. Exterior chrome parts were re-plated as necessary, and the stainless rocker trim replaced. The original Fuchs alloy wheels were refinished by Harvey Weidman and fitted with new tires.

This spotless 1968 911S coupe is supplied with a correct Fuchs spare wheel, a jack, tool kit, and a folio of restoration invoices. This is an outstanding example of Porsche's determination to build the world's best driver's car, and is sure to please the most discriminating enthusiast.

The example offered here was delivered new on 7 November 1968 to Porsche Dealership Hahn Sportwagen of Stuttgart finished in stunning Blood Orange. The first owner was a Mr Deleplace from Paris, France, who owned a Bosch centre in Paris that specialized in mechanical fuel injection. He enjoyed the car for the following three decades, until 1999, when he sold it to a Mr Van de Kerckove who then went on to sell it to the current owner in 2004.

In late 2018, it was serviced at an authorized Porsche dealership in Lyon where it benefited from an oil and filter change, brake circuit overhaul including a new brake master cylinder and four new Michelin tires. Very rarely does the opportunity arise to acquire a largely original, early 911 like this one. Always been regularly maintained but never restored, it has only travelled a total of 129,500 km from new and is ready to be enjoyed by its fourth owner.
