1965 Gas tank colors and textures?

    Hello,
I'm new to posting on the forum. I have searched for this information but I haven't really narrowed down my plan. I'm restoring a 65' to a high level with hopefully the correct details.
This tank had undercoating sprayed all over it but I found the correct gray color when I scraped it off. My questions are
    1. The entire tank was sprayed gray at the factory?
    2. The thick dynamat looking stuff was applied over the gray paint in the area of the spare tire bump and left black?
    3. The bottom was left gray or sprayed black textured with the rest of the body?

The tank has been dipped and lined inside. I have the exterior sprayed with grey epoxy primer that matches the gray that I found on the original tank. Just need to decide to leave the bottom gray? And spray bedliner the tire bump area to somewhat copy the thick sticky mat.

    Thanks for any help.

Hi Brad, My '65 (301994) tank was all gray and then had body underseal applied to the bottom. I used the POR15 system and paint followed by Wurth Underseal. The last picture showing the "dynamat looking stuff" was taken from Darryl's restoration site for his '65 912.

Brad- I think you will find different answers depending on build date... my unrestored '65 is smooth grey with undercoating on the bottom and the "tar" like substance where the spare goes (like 19-911-65's restored pic above).

Yep, it seems to be moving as the build date changes.

This tank was smooth gray with some spraybomb black coating on it when I scraped it down. I'm confident the smooth gray was all over the tank orginally. The dynmat stuff was applied after the paint. At least there was gray under it.

So technically I can spray the bottom the same texture/black coating as I put on the undercarriage? The grey from the bottom looks a little goofy to me.

When I ordered parts the other day they told me it was an early 65' by the serial #.

    Thanks for all the help.

    Brad

What is the serial #? That should help to establish a trend.

Does anyone know where I can get a tank drain? I seem to have misplaced this one.
