Problem is when you remove the tank part of the sombrero is on the tank support. I guess you could just cut it? Also there is the typical corrosion under the edges of the seam that have to be delbt with. Does anyone know if the Sombrero was one or two pieces? I think I figured that on 397 there was no Sombrero so I am lucky.

    Jim,
Thanks for photos of an original. Nothing beats that. How long did the gray tank carry over? I was trying to determine the same question for my early (July '67) 1968 912 Targa. Any help there?

    Hi Steve

I'm assuming that your comment was directed at me. Your 68 would look just like the photos of the 66, built in 65, car in my post. Did you get your stuff from me yet?

    Regards

    Jim

Well, here's the tank of 301382. The car isn't "all original" but I think the tank finish is original--it still has the "Sombrero."

As to the "Sombrero," it's # 70 in the lower right of this PET illustration:

PET calls it 70 E 901.556.101.20 BASE FOR EMERGENCY WHEEL -68 1 911 COUPE but in spite of the fact that PET has a drawing of 901.556.101.20 by itself implying it's a solid object, it seems to be made from some kind of goo. I's much like tar, but it may be some sort of plastic because it's stable over a range of temperatures.

I think it's probably some sort of undercoating.

After reflecting on this for a while, the goo [901.556.101.20] on the gas tank is similar to stuff in the engine bay. I got a decent match in the engine bay with Würth High-Build Underseal, although my can may be an older not-so-low VOC formula.

The tricky part might be that it looks like there's some sort of pattern in the goo on the tank. Maybe that could be pressed in with some sort of mat.

A large asphalt-rubber based sound deadening pad heated to conform to the tank if possible would be the best replica .It is definitely a separate preformed piece that was placed on the tank , not like the engine bay undercoating that is sprayed .

Maybe that will be Soterik's next challenge.
