Thread: 1965 Gas tank colors and textures?

  1. #51

    Gas Tank sound deadening material

    The sombrero has a surface texture that only mimics a fabric, it has no fiber layer, no fabric content.

    It is a complete mastic sheet, like a soft caulk through out. It appears to have been made and the texture pressed to one side only.
    Note the areas where the spare tire has left a precise imprint of it's sidewall text. Over time it pressed to that imprint depth, it is that soft.

    With abuse it broke off. Nothing held it together.

    Few questions;

    A) Does anybody knows until when the sombrero was used?
    Does this changed with color and texture?
    B) When does color/texture changed from smooth light grey to darker and texture?
    Was this above 303000?
    C) Does anyone has a correct colorcode for the darker grey/textured finishing?
    And how was this textured finish done?

    Thanks

    Couple questions on '65-66 fuel tanks?
    1. Color was light grey no texture on top but texture on bottom?
    2. Was there anything different on 65-66 vs. 67 and later?
    3. 65-66 color was lighter than 67 and later and those had texture on top?
    Thanks for comments or opinions and/or pics. I've looked at all pics in this thread and I am still confused.
