Thread: 1965 Gas tank colors and textures?

I'm working on 300622 for a customer and that tank is black on top (no sealer) and has the chassis undercoat on the bottom.

Ed, maybe that tank had been replaced at some time or maybe painted and undercoated. I wonder what's under the black.

Try Pelican or Stoddard. I bought a filter and plug from Stoddard and had to also order the aluminum crush ring for both.

Good point John, I don't think replaced, but possibly painted over. This car has been in this area and I have worked on it for three different customers since the early eighties. I tried to buy it once back in the early nineties, offered $6500 for it, but she sold it to the guy who has it now for $11,000. I shoulda out bid him, but that was all the money I had then!! If I figure out the tank color was really black I'll let you know.

    1965 Gas Tank color

Here is the tank from 300 953 an April 1965 car:

    Grey top and bottom.

The "rubbery" pad over the hump in the gas tank is about 1/16" thick and has taken to crumbling and braking off. It's not like a inner-tube rubber more like a heavy putty - soft pliable but not stretchy, it has imprints from the spare tire side wall lettering.

The lower surface (exposed below the pan) has the black body schutz sprayed texture.

    1967 Gas Tank Color

Here is Paul Risinger's, one owner, 1967S concours car. Much more texture but the grey color.

The underside was a show condition repaint. (I'm thinking Paul took a little liberty in showing in grey - rather than the under pan Schutz black - but I could be wrong - it's not my car... and it has always been show room gorgeous).

Any updates here? My car is #302397. The tank is all grey. The only Schutz was the area under the spare tire. Not sure if original to the car, but I could tell the paint and Schutz were original and had never been repainted. I do know that the tank has been in the car since the mid 70's based on pictures I have. I'm trying to make sure this is correct before I recoat it with Schutz.

Mark, the tank I referenced above (VIN 300622) WAS originally grey under the aerosol black probably sprayed on when the front pan was done. Top grey no undercoat, bottom, black undercoat, and spare tire soft donut.

Ed, it seems to me that all the early cars tanks, 65-66, were 100% Grey with the Sombrero tar paper donut under the spare tire. I think Schutz was on the later cars, maybe starting in 67 based on the post above from Bob. Does anyone know where to buy or has anyone seen a tar paper membrane made other than the one Daryl made? I believe it should be thicker than 15# felt paper. Something similar to the other tar based membranes used on the 356's maybe.

Edit: I think this thread is the most original and correct finish I have seen.
