davep - I don't know what a Kardex is so I'm not sure if I have one or not. We've owned the car since about 1993. Didn't get much of the history from the buyer. We drove it for a few years fairly regularly then it sat in the garage for about 14 years until my daughter said "Dad - let's fix up the red car!" How could I refuse? Anyways, after recently going to Luftgekült 5 I started to notice some discrepancies in what I thought I knew about the car. I've documented what I know here: https://blog.altgnat.com/the-mystery/

Keith, there are many threads on Kardex, but here is one where many are posted. The Kardex is a factory warranty document that is based on other internal documents. A CofA is produced by PCNA based on the Kardex, but withholds some information. We also find that translating the Kardex ourselves is far more accurate.

Keith, can I add to the conversation on your car.
We all have to verify where we are getting information. Lets start with the Drivers Manual that you are referring to for the Windshield Washer bottle opening. Note the print date is X/67. That is 10th month of 1967 for the 1968 model year. That latch panel opening for the ww bottle is a Model Year 1968 change. (Note that manual's photo's of the Elephant Hide interiors, '68 one year only). The 1967 911S Drivers Manual has a cover in Maroon and a blue band at the bottom, print date V/66. (May 1966). Your bottle behind the lid latch panel is 1966/1967 model year.
Paint colors numbers were stamped at the factory into that small tag. The info it gives takes precedence in accuracy to any color that is now on the car, remember the car has been around for over 50 years and owners have been known to make color changes - on some cars - it was a lot of changes. Bare metal sand with complete new paint in not unheard of. (As a side story I had a car that was originally Signal Red - repainted a Burgundy (multiple gray and red primers layers and shades of color layers) when sanding down thru the multiple layers we came to a orange color - only later it was found out the factory undercoated the early Signal Red's with a lighter orange tint to get the final Red shade to their liking). When you get your Kardex you will know the original factory color.
Your current engine number 4080320 has a wealth of information. The "S" engines from 1967 had serial numbers 960xxx (note six digits) starting in Model Year 1968 the engine serial numbers added an extra digit and initiated a code for each digit. That first digit could be a 1 thru 4, starting with the 90 hp 4 cyl up to the 160HP 6 cyl. Second Digit 0 regular engine (1 being for the Sportomatic, 8 for a race engine, etc), third digit being either a 8 or a 9 for year. Your 408xxxx is a 160 hp, built for a standard Transmission, for year 1968 car. The TYPE code should be stamped on the case 901/02. Note in your photo the Oil Sending unit has the date stamped on it... 8/67. Nice. August part production for a Model Year 1968 engine, it has never been replaced.

Looks like you got a newer engine and transmission at some point. It would have been a real reach to have a warranty replacement a full year after the car was made, or a prior owner who wanted a correct type engine and trans. who knows. Look to the Kardex if the car was Porsche serviced for the first number of years. Hopefully it will have notes.
Engine and Transmission codes are from the little white "Technical Specifications" booklet from Porsche.
When looking at any of the web sites with information lists "use extreme caution" - with some research you will find from which period - 1960's, 1970's 80's or 90's they pulled the info from.
Most were lumped together and can give conflicting and just plain wrong info. It only took 40 years to point out the German numbers were for year of production in calendar years which included two model years....some are scrambled by later authors who used one method for some years and the other for the remaining years - not knowing the difference. (The tell is body and engine quantities per year).
It looks like you have a fun car, - get it back on the road and drive the stink out of it.... wonderful cars.

Bob 67S - thanks for the info. You have an eagle eye combined with encyclopedic knowledge! I haven't got to the Kardex yet. I took the interior door and rear shelf panels out to get redone. The inside of the doors are red but, when I took it down to GA Coachwork to ask about paint he (George) looked at the code then pointed back at the exposed "luggage tie" mount brackets on the rear shelf and said "there's the original color - silver."
When I bought it the seller gave me the original driver's seat and wheel (it had Recaro/Momo installed). I found rails for the seat and put it back in. The big old wheel is a hoot but the seats are really worn ($900/seat repair estimate).
Several months ago the guy I bought it from recognized it and was happy to see it still on the road. He asked if I knew how much it was currently worth then said he didn't want to know.
Here's the Type Code on the Trans. The shift pattern is "Zees eez not und drag-racer - First, (please don't hit Reverse oops, damnit, oops fourth!) Second->Third, Fourth, and oh yeah, I still have one more gear - Fifth."
One more thing... It also has an electronic ignition model that my mechanic said wasn't original to that year but implored me to never revert. The car starts on the first twist of the key nine times out of ten so I have no incentive to replace it. I just tried taking a picture where the writing is legible but no luck - should have thought of that when the engine was out.
The clutch is in and I'm back to driving it around the hills of East San Diego County - woot!
