    Is the adjusting screw supposed to be black or silver?

    Hi Richard,

    In my experience both are black phosphate. Designed to retain lubrication..

    I started making my own "black nuts and bolts" for fun but it's now turned into a hobby to complete a 2004 Kawasaki Mule we have on the farm.
    This thing has seen mud, cow pies, snow, more mud and more pies.

    A wire wheel was absolutely necessary to cut the crud and rust.
    The process is pretty simple.
    1- Propane or MAAP Gas torch
    1- Quart metal can (Lowes has them).
    1- Oil "Dealers Choice"

    I filled my can about halfway. It really doesn't matter if it's clean or not. I had a few oddball containers that were half full. I think what I have in my can is Valvoline 20/50 Racing. LOL. A fire extinguisher isn't a bad idea but I haven't had any flash fires in the oil container so far and doing it outside is the only way to go. Trust me. A friend and I experimented in the barn garage this past winter. It STINKS.

    Heat the parts until they change color and drop them in. The results vary depending on the metal. I've had some real beauties come out looking like black phosphate and I've had others pick up color, mostly a dark blue black.

    Cheap thrills.

    This is the hardware for one of the tail lights. The chassis nuts and bolts turned out better.

    Your results look good but since I live in a city where a fire place already is a point of discussion I use a 3 step kit for single / forgotten pieces. 15 minutes (longer doesn’t harm) and it’s done. The last step is “also”:soaking it in oil.
