If your car is Karmann bodied, then the paint badge will be a Karmann badge. The body type digit in the VIN (fifth from the right) is a 2 from 1969 to 1971. T & E models in 1969 & 1970, only T's in 1971.

Dave, do we have any indication as to what the production numbers represent in terms of build characteristics or features?

The production # or the Karmann # is simply a serial number for the bodyshop. There is a good chance that it is directly linked to a purchase order however; the PO would spell out all the details of the cars build. However, the production # only lists 4 basic characteristics:
format XYZabcd
X=0 replacement body
X=1 production body
Y=0 coupe
Y=1 targa
Y=2 Karmann coupe
Y=3 Karmann 914/6 targa
Z= last digit of model year beginning 1969
Z=9 1969
Z=0 1970
Z=1 1971 and so forth
abcd is the sequence #
So it is unable to distinguish 911/911RS/912, sunroof, or even LHD vs RHD.

Does anyone know if Karman's production records are still intact?
What exists of the company and it's records today?
Any contacts?
I am calling out to all those in search of those unanswered questions about your Kardex.
Any information on Karman's build records and being able to tie production numbers to chassis numbers on 1969 cars and back would paramount for 911 collectors, Registry members and Porsche AG.

Here is one:
119220780
color 6808
12962 62 (tunnel)(spaced like that)
Dash # when I get it out.
I have had 5 Karman cars in recently.
3-912s 1-70T and 1-69E
not including my 356....
I'll try to get their numbers also.
Perry911; I have found that they will not give you production numbers they will only verify if the number that you have is right. So even if you find the Karman numbers, they will only be of use to the individual person requesting the info.

Chad, you seem to be missing a digit somewhere.; the production & Karmann #'s are 7 digits. I appreciate every bit of info provided.
Harvey, you are correct, the factory will only confirm the production # matches the VIN if you provide both numbers. I believe no record of Karmann body #'s was kept by Porsche. Still, it is an interesting study, and would greatly appreciate any number sets that you can. Karmann 912's without a number under the access panel have have them on the top of the dash in a corner of the speaker recess; only the first few thousand cars.
